You Can Lead a Horse to Water But You Can't Make the Lady Fish
By Trout Whisperer @ 10:07 AM :: 276 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Tales from the Woods, Fishing 101

She isn’t perfect, yet...

There is a lady I know that will sit in the boat with her husband for hours on end and read or suntan. He always buys the combo platter resident fishing license just in case you know what freezes over and she might want to fish. He hopes, he keeps the faith. I understand him.

She loves the trip planning, site seeing and stopping to take photos of any critter in or out of water or woods. Loading gear, backing the trailer in or we nap and she drives is all okay with this fine lady. Great conversationalist, unless we mention the fish word.

Rain, sunshine, bugs, fish, no fish, she never complains. Fries up a mean batch of tators with our catch. Packs one heck of a lunch. We need to stop for an adult beverage after a hot day of fishing we have our designated driver. This lady is nice to have along fishing. But she aint perfect. She won’t touch a fishing pole.

She loves to eat them flaky fillets and he preaches, pleads and begs her to add to the groaning board, but to no avail. This is one of the wars of attrition, as a guy, I want him to win. He hooks one and she sez “oh that’s nice, getta another one honey”.

It makes me mad but she won’t give two or three excuses for not fishing. She only lobs one verbal grenade. “I don’t catch fish; it might keep him from catching one”. We have offered ever imaginable answer to that line. Now, Instead of any female rebuttal we get “nice day, isn’t it boys”. We ask a simple request and get the runaround in the run-a-bout. She confuses me.

I don’t think that’s particularly fair to “evade” answer, then in the reply, change the subject to what as guys we were actually paying attention too. Men live on earth, women are from Mars or Venus, that was a book she should read.

So they ask me if I’d like a sandwich for lunch. That’s a no brain’r. Who turns down perfectly good free food? I even say thanks. My buddy asks her if she would like him to bait the hook for her and she responds with,” need a soda with that dear”?

She gets in the boat and goes fishing with us, but doesn’t fish herself. She cooks the fish, eats the fish, but wont fish. Every year he asks her should he buy the husband wife license and she yes, but doesn’t fish. She even makes up better excuses for our buddies when we don’t catch fish.

You can lead a horse to water, and if you wait long enough, that pony, it will drink the stuff. You know where is never gonna freeze over no matter the rumors. I don’t think she’s ever going to fish. We will never give up asking her to fish. What is the best way to communicate with a fish? Drop it a line. It’s easier for me to fish with men than it is with some women, one in particular.
