BEAR HUNTER DEFENDS SELF WITH FRENCH BREAD
Conservation Officer (CO) Brent Speldrich (McGregor, MN) encountered a bear hunter busy checking his bait. After locating the hunter’s firearm, which was near Speldrich and away from the hunter, he let out a soft growl. The wide-eyed hunter, stood up at the speed of light, and started to grasp at anything he could find to defend himself. The only object he found was a loaf of what appeared to be French bread. After the hunter realized it was an officer, not a bear, both had a hearty chuckle...

CO Chris Vinton (Perham, MN) assisted an outraged neighborhood capture two suspects in the killing of an albino squirrel. The squirrel was a neighborhood novelty and treasure. A witness observed the two parked near a tree when they shot the squirrel. The officer went to the residence of one of the suspects and asked, "I guess you know why I’m here?" A concerned citizen leaving a gas station told CO Jeff Halverson (Staples) that there was an intoxicated man in the store. The individual was a passenger and not the driver of his car, so there was no issue with him. However, the concerned citizen had to be stopped 15 miles later because he failed to pay for his gas! CO Brad Schultz (Center City) noted a very erratic set of vehicle tracks on road. A short time later the officer encountered a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver got out, nearly falling into the ditch. Officer noted a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. Officer Dale Ebel (Duluth) reported a truck's rear bumper prevented it from falling completely through the ice. The owner thought the ice had improved from the previous week. When asked why he thought that the man said that two weeks earlier he drove his ATV on the same lake and fell through. A spearer explained to CO Tony Arhart (Deer River) that a large northern pike had ripped his live decoy and the harness loose and swam away. Fortunately for him the 36-inch fish was greedy and was speared by his buddy from a neighboring shelter. The missing decoy and the hardware were found in the pike’s stomach.
