The Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery Visitor Center today announced a wide array of nature programs taking place each Saturday during February aimed at getting people outdoors. All programs are free of charge.

  • Monarchs, Milkweeds and More: Feb. 3, 10 a.m. Learn about the life cycle of the monarch, its habitat and its remarkable annual migration to Mexico. This one-hour program is a collaborative effort with the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo. All ages welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

  • Steelhead Fishing Basics: Feb. 10, 10 a.m. Participants will learn about basic steelhead fishing techniques, proper equipment and good fishing spots in southwest Michigan. The program will last approximately 1-1/2 hours. All ages are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

  • Winter Bird Walk and More: Feb. 17, 10 a.m. Discover the many species of birds that stay in Michigan through the winter and participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. A slide show will be presented at 11:30 in the auditorium following the approximately one-mile walk. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring your binoculars if you have them. Light refreshments will be served. This special event is a collaborative effort with the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo and Wild Birds Unlimited.

  • Winter Snowshoe Walk: Feb. 24, 1 p.m. Enjoy a snowshoe walk (if there's sufficient snow) on the center's nature trails. Learn how to use snowshoes and then go for a one-mile walk to test new skills. Walk will last about one hour. Please dress appropriately. Extra snowshoes will be available for those without. If there's no snow, the program will be a nature hike. All ages are welcome.
