State recreation officials announced today that state parks and recreation areas will be hosting events for the winter Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18.

At the Rifle River Recreation Area in Lupton you will find a bonfire, hot chocolate and hotdogs on the beach. Fish for free on Devoe Lake and then join the fun on the beach from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. After your toes have warmed up, put on your cross country skis and follow the beautiful trails in the Rifle River Recreation Area.

Seven Lakes State Park in Holly is hosting a clinic to teach the basics of ice fishing at the Fisherman's Cove Shelter. Hot chocolate will be available and some prizes will be given out.

Mitchell State Park in Cadillac will feature an ice fishing contest at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center.

Port Crescent State Park in Port Austin will host fishing and then cross country skiing by candlelight and sleigh rides. Refreshments also will be available.

At Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea, the Eddy Discovery Center will host an evening program on Saturday, Feb. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The program is being sponsored by the Waterloo Natural History Association, featuring live owls and owl calling. There is a small fee for the program. Limited seating is available, so advanced registration is required by calling 734-475-3170.

If you don't want to go fishing but still want to GO-Get Outdoors, you could join the stewardship volunteers at the Pinckney Recreation Area in Pinckney on Saturday, Feb. 17, or the Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m., to help remove invasive species. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Laurel Malvitz at 248-359-9057.

For more information regarding the above events, or other events at state parks and recreation areas, contact Cheryl Greaney at 517-373-0399 or visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr.
