The Natural Resource Commission approved the 2007 elk season dates and quotas last Thursday at their monthly meeting.
The dates for Hunt Period 1 (early elk season) are Aug. 25-29 and Sept. 15-18. The dates for Hunt Period 2 (December elk season) are Dec.11-18. The time frame for Hunt Period 3 (January elk season) would begin on the Wednesday closest to Jan. 15 and be open for five days, if the hunt is necessary to achieve population management goals.
The NRC action also changed the Wildlife Conservation Order to require hunters to mark the actual kill site before moving an elk.
"Conservation officers have expressed concern that some hunters are moving harvested elk prior to field dressing," said Rodney Clute, DNR big game specialist. Moving the animal makes it difficult or in some cases, impossible, to investigate the kill site. Adding this requirement to the Wildlife Conservation Order should help alleviate this problem.
Interested individuals may apply for an elk license from June 15 to July 15. Only Michigan residents are eligible to apply. Hunters may apply online at www.michigan.gov/dnr, at any authorized license agent or at a DNR Operations Service Center. A nonrefundable $4 fee must be paid at the time of application.
