The Department of Natural Resources is conducting Michigan's first State Virtual Archery Tournament for students enrolled at schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).
More than 125 student archers will compete in the tournament. Teams are separated by grade level division (4-6, 7-8 and 9-12) and are comprised of 16 to 24 students with at least five team members of the opposite gender. Schools unable to field a team were permitted to register students to compete individually. Teams and individuals may conduct their shoot according to the state tournament guidelines any time between March 31 and May 4, with final scores submitted to the DNR by that date.
"The NASP, even during a competition, offers an activity that students of all genders, abilities and backgrounds can participate in," said Mary Emmons, coordinator for the Archery in the Schools Program. "Though all team members shoot on their tournament day, only the top 12 individual final scores, including four final scores of the opposite gender, are summed for the team score. The diversity in scoring combined with the large team size makes archery a unique team sport because it provides an opportunity for students of varying abilities to contribute equally toward team success."
Several archery manufacturers have generously donated prizes to be distributed to the tournament champions. A Morrell target will be awarded to each school which has a team place first in an age division. In addition, the highest scoring male and female archer statewide will be awarded a Matthews Genesis Pro compound bow and a Morrell target.
The first place teams and the highest scoring male and female archer also will be invited to participate in the NASP National Tournament which will be held June 9 in Louisville, Ky. Teams and individuals from 42 participating NASP states will be competing for college scholarships and other prizes.
