Hair samples from the carcass of a large breed dog are being examined at the Michigan State Police lab in Grayling as part of an investigation into how the animal died near the scene of a small wildfire last weekend. The dog was found suffering from severe burn injuries by two persons who were in the vicinity of a three small wildfires, or spot fires, Sunday near Alpena. Department of Natural Resources conservation officers who responded to the scene continue to investigate the dog's death.
A person out mushroom hunting and a turkey hunter called 9-1-1 after spotting a small wildfire near Alpena on Sunday. They also discovered a dog that was badly burned and nearly dead. One of the men dispatched the dog after discovering it. Conservation officers who responded to the scene gathered evidence at the scene that indicated that the dog may have been intentionally set on fire.
There are suspects that the conservation officers are further investigating, DNR law enforcement officials said. No warrants have been issued, and the investigation continues.
