The Department of Natural Resources Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program is offering an advanced level Beyond BOW salmon fishing workshop, Aug. 17-19, out of the Fairport Marina at the tip of the Garden Peninsula in Delta County. Fishing will take place in northern Lake Michigan.

"Salmon fishing on the Great Lakes requires some special knowledge and skills, but it can also be one of the most exciting fishing experiences," said Sharon Pitz, a DNR staffer who is a member of the Upper Peninsula BOW Planning Committee. "It's quite a thrill to catch a large chinook salmon which can rip off many yards of line on its first run, or hook into a coho that's full of fight and tries to wear you down."

The $110 registration cost includes two nights lodging, boats, guides and all fishing equipment. The first fishing trip will depart the marina Friday evening with other trips planned for Saturday and on Sunday morning.

Enrollment is limited to eight participants. For more information and the registration form, visit the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr and click on "Education & Outreach" to locate the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman page. A map and other information are available on that site.

Questions regarding the workshop can be directed to Sharon Pitz at (906) 228-6561 or to DNR BOW Program Coordinator Lynn Marla at (517) 241-2225.
