Department of Natural Resources officials today announced that the north loop of the Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground will be closed until further notice due to an inoperable well. The campground is located in Otsego County, via the Sturgeon River Road northeast of Vanderbilt in the Pigeon River Country State Forest.
The county health department requires a potable water source for every 25 campsites. There are 39 sites at the Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground, thus two operable wells are required. In order to comply with health department requirements, DNR officials decided to temporarily close some of the campsites until the inoperable well can be fixed.
The adjacent Pickerel Lake Pathway, boat launch and other campsites will remain open with one operable well located near the boat launch side of the campground. Signs will be posted at the inoperable well and at the information board directing campers to the location of the working well on the southern end of the campground. The DNR offers six other state forest campgrounds and one state forest trail camp within the Pigeon River Country State Forest.
Questions concerning the temporary closure of the north loop of the Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground may be directed to Robin Pearson at 989-732-3541, extension 5045. Information about other camping opportunities in nearby counties can be found on the DNR's Web site at www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails, or by calling the DNR Gaylord Operations Service Center at 989-732-3541, extension 0 for the operator.
