The Department of Natural Resources announced today that the year long contest to name the "cottage" at Fayette Historic State Park has come to an end. The building has been officially named Furnace Hill Lodge. The winner of the contest is Gary Gustafson of Garden, Michigan.
The name is appropriate due to the fact that the road leading out of the historic townsite was known as Furnace Hill Road. The old school that was located about 50 yards from the lodge was known as Furnace Hill School.
"Mr. Gustafson captured the perfect name in that it utilized known historical names and still captured a moniker that flows extremely well," said Fayette's supervisor Randy Brown.
Furnace Hill Lodge sleeps up to 10 people and is equipped with two full size beds, a single, a queen and a futon bed. A modern kitchen includes a refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, a toaster and coffeemaker. Dishes, pots, cutlery, glassware, mixing bowls and other essentials are included. A single bathroom includes a tub/shower unit, flush toilet and sink. Bedding, towels and all kitchen linens are included.
Nestled on the edge of the woods directly off the entrance road, the lodge offers a private setting within walking distance of the restored historic townsite. Fayette Historic State Park offers visitors the unmatched serenity of a Lake Michigan harbor, white cliffs and verdant forests. The lodge serves as a functional, comfortable modern base for a wide variety of recreation pursuits, including hunting, hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
The Furnace Hill Lodge will be open year-round for winter pursuits including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. There are lots of opportunities available for fall camping, Labor Day, and fall hunting. Autumn fishing can be spectacular, and Furnace Hill Lodge makes a great base of operations. Reservations for the lodge can be made by calling the park at 906-644-2603.
