Harrisville State Park will hold a Hunter Education Weekend on Sept. 8 and 9, the Department of Natural Resources announced today.

The weekend will feature a hunter education class that begins at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Participants in the class will have an opportunity to learn how to shoot a .22 rim fire rifle and to learn proper archery techniques at a rifle and archery range set up for the class participants. Successful participants in the class will be certified in both Hunter Education and in the International Bowhunter Education Program (IBEP). Also, individuals between the ages of 10 and 16 who score 100% on the hunter's education test will receive a free junior hunting license and a sports card license sponsored by Lincoln Outdoor Center.

There is no charge for the class but all participants are being asked to donate a non-perishable food item that will be given to the Sportsman Against Hunger organization.

The class will be held at the park headquarters. Lunch and refreshments are being provided by Mr. Ed's IGA and by the Flour Garden Restaurant and Bakery. Other sponsors of the event include the Michigan 4-H of Alcona County, Northeastern Window and Door and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Law Division and the Parks and Recreation Division.

The number of openings for the class is limited so register soon by calling Colleen Higgins or Dan Mullen at Harrisville State Park at 1-989-724-5126.

Harrisville State Park is located off US-23, a half-mile south of the M-72 intersection in Harrisville. Campsites are available in the park for the weekend. Many other events are also happening in the area, including a car cruise from Lincoln to Harrisville on Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a Friday night dance at the Alcona County Fair Grounds from 8 p.m. to midnight with live entertainment, an antique car and motorcycle show in Lincoln on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., a Down Hill Derby in Lincoln on Saturday at 1 p.m., and the US 23 Coastal Highway Bike rally is being held on Saturday and Sunday.

Reservations for campsites at Harrisville State Park may be made by calling 800-44-PARKS or on line at www.midnrreservations.com.
