Department of Natural Resources reminds cross country skiers that Tahquamenon Falls State Park has the four-mile Giant Pines Loop trail in the park that will be groomed for cross-country skiing this winter. The trail can be accessed from the Upper Falls parking area.

The park also is offering guided cross-country ski excursions through the snow-covered backcountry of Tahquamenon on Jan. 26 and Feb. 16.

"Participants will be exploring the more remote areas of the park," said Park Interpreter Theresa Grattan. "These trips will last approximately four hours and cover a minimum of nine miles of moderately hilly terrain."

These programs are recommended for only those with previous cross-country skiing experience, particularly on non-groomed surfaces. Preregistration is required by calling the park at (906) 492-3415.

Guided snowshoe hikes and lantern-lit cross-country skiing also will take place every Saturday in February. The snowshoe hikes begin at 4 p.m. A limited number of snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors then can end their evening by taking a few laps on the three-quarter-mile lantern-lit cross-country ski loop from 6-8 p.m. Both programs begin at the Upper Falls parking area.

"Snowshoeing is easier than it looks; it's great for all ages and no experience is necessary," Grattan said, "and seeing a moon-lit view of the falls is fantastic. We'll also have a nice bonfire going so skiers can warm themselves between laps."
