Mitchell State Park in Cadillac reminds campers that outdoor recreation doesn't have to stop when the temperatures and snow start falling. Whether it's snowmobiling, ice fishing, downhill or cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just enjoying the winter landscape, Mitchell State Park has a lot to offer in the winter.

Mitchell State Park has what you need to "GO-Get Outdoors" and enjoy winter, as comfortably as camping the rest of the year. The campground has electricity at all the sites and a heated toilet building with showers open all year. Park roads and campsites are plowed and maintained to accommodate campers. If you don't have a trailer or motor home, there is a mini-cabin that is available, and a "new" camper cabin that has two bedrooms and an open area. Both cabins are heated and located on Lake Cadillac.

The park is located between Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell with a canal connecting the two lakes. Pike, walleye, perch, crappie, and bluegill are the prime winter targets for ice fishing. There is plenty of available snowmobiling in the area, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails that can be accessed from the park. As with any winter activity on the lakes, park officials caution you to check on ice conditions before venturing out. Downhill skiing also is only a short drive away.

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located in the park, is open on weekends during the winter. There is a 2.5 mile groomed cross-country ski trail behind the center. Snowshoes are available at no charge at the center for those who have never tried the sport before.

Camping is $27 per night, the mini-cabin is $45 per night, and the "new" camper cabin is $80 per night. Reservations for campsites or cabins can be made by calling 800-447-2757, or on-line at www.midnrreservations.com.

The intermittent camping program (storing a camper on a campsite) is also available from Sept. 15 through May 15. For more information about intermittent camping, contact the park at 231-775-7911. The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center can be reached at 231-779-1321. Both the park and the visitor center are located on M-115 in Cadillac.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
