The Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center will hold an ice fishing program on Saturday, Feb. 16, during Michigan's annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend, when all fishing license fees will be waived for both residents and visitors who wish to fish on Michigan waters.
The program begins at 1 p.m. at the Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center located on US-31 in Oden, approximately five miles east of Petoskey. From the center, the program moves to the ice on Emmet County's Crooked Lake, which offers good through-the-ice fishing opportunities for yellow perch, walleye and northern pike.
"Ice fishing is a challenging and fun way to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months" said Maureen Jacobs, visitor center interpreter. Several warming tents will be available on the ice as well as hot cocoa and snacks.
All equipment will be provided for this free program, and no fishing license is needed to participate. No registration is required. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather. For more information about this program, contact the Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center at (231) 348-0998.
