Eddy Discover Center Announces Spring 2008 Programs

The Gerald Eddy Discovery Center has announced its spring programs for 2008. The center is located at Waterloo State Recreation Area near Chelsea.

The programs include:

Name That Skull: NSI (Nature Scene Investigation). At 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, participants can learn how to identify animal skulls using a key, and also will learn how to look for clues to what the animal ate and how it lived.

It's Spring! At 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, visitors can enjoy a guided spring walk along the Spring Pond Trail and learn about animals emerging from hibernation, frog calls and other interesting seasonal happenings.

Energy Alternatives for You. Families are encouraged to visit on Saturday, April 26, to learn about alternative energy sources and discover how families can incorporate current alternative energy sources into everyday life. A hands-on activity for the entire family about using solar power is planned for this program that starts at 2 p.m.

Astronomy 101. On Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. participants can join in on a learning experience about the earth, moon and solar system.

Pressed Flowers. On Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m., participants can learn the art of flower pressing using domestic flower varieties that park staff will provide (picking flowers in the park is prohibited). Children can learn to make a craft project, such as a bookmark or a picture frame, which makes a perfect Mother's Day gift.

Rockin' Rocks. On Saturday, May 17, participants can learn fun facts about rocks just outside the Discovery Center, and take a closer look at unique rocks, minerals, fossils and geologic features. This program begins at 11 a.m.

There is no charge for the programs offered at the Eddy Center this spring; however, all visitors must display a Motor Vehicle Permit when entering a state park or recreation area. Permits are available at the entrance to Waterloo for $6 for a daily and $24 for an annual. Permits for out of state residents are $8 for a daily and $29 for an annual.
