Waterloo Recreation Area is sponsoring a "Pre-1840s Rendezvous" on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m., and again on Sunday, May 11, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at noon. The park will feature "GO-Get Outdoors" family-friendly activities all weekend, allowing visitors to experience life as it was pre-1840.
Modern day dedicated individuals have learned to share and teach the arts and skills of the early Americans. Activities include tomahawk throwing, traditional bow shoot, two-person tug-of-war, frying pan toss, fire starting demo, Dutch oven cooking demo, jewelry making, leather working and hide prep for tanning. All activities are free and open for both day visitors and campers at the Portage Lake organizational campground. Motor vehicle permits will be required.
For more information, contact the Waterloo Recreation Area Headquarters at (734) 475-8307. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling (800) 44-PARKS (or 447-2757). Waterloo-Portage Lake is located off Seymour Road, between Race Road (Exit 146) and Mt. Hope Road (Exit 150) off I-94.
All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
