Adults and kids who would like to learn outdoors skills in a friendly up-north setting are invited to the Department of Natural Resources' Family Outdoor Weekend on Aug. 18-19, at the Deep Portage Environmental Learning Center near Hackensack.
The center, situated among forest and lakes, is located about 40 minutes north of Brainerd. Families who attend the event will have the opportunity to learn fishing, canoeing, archery, air- and laser-gun shooting, orienteering and rock wall climbing.
"This is a great opportunity for families to get away for the weekend, try something new, and discover the outdoors skills that so many Minnesotans truly enjoy," said Linda Bylander, DNR Becoming An Outdoors Woman Program coordinator. The DNR has hosted two family events in the Twin Cities area and both were popular, she said.
"Getting outdoors with family and friends is a healthy thing to do," said Bylander. "The connection among nature, our children and ourselves is a very important part of our physical and mental health, according to experts."
The event, which includes lodging, food, equipment and instruction, costs $60 per person or $200 per family of four. Family scholarships are available due to the generosity of The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
