Severe drought conditions that continue to persist in northeastern Minnesota have prompted new fire restrictions from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Until further notice, campfires and use of charcoal grills are banned or restricted in state parks, state forest recreation areas and waysides in Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties due to extremely high fire danger.
These restrictions include highly visited parks along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS
No campfires or charcoal grill fires are allowed at these parks:
- Bear Head Lake
- Cascade River
- George Crosby Manitou
- Grand Portage
- Judge Magney
- Side Lake Campground at McCarthy Beach State Park
- Grand Portage is a day use only park with no campsites
No campfires or charcoal grill fires are allowed at backpack sites in these parks:
- Jay Cooke
- Gooseberry Falls
- Split Rock Lighthouse
- Tettegouche
- Temperance River
No campfires or charcoal grill fires are allowed at these state forest campgrounds and day-use areas:
- Ash River Forest Campground and Day-Use Area (DUA)
- Wakemup Forest Campground and DUA
- Woodenfrog Forest Campground and DUA
- Chester Lake Forest campsites
- Devilfish Lake Forest campsites
- Esther Lake Forest campsites
- Grand Portage Accesses DUA
- McFarland Lake Forest campsites
- Twin Lakes Forest campsites
- Eckbeck Forest Campground and DUA
- Finland Forest Campground and DUA
- Hinsdale Island Forest campsites
- Indian Lake Campground
- Sullivan Lake Forest Campground
Campfires are allowed from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., but only in the main campgrounds and no charcoal grill use is allowed at any time in these parks:
- Gooseberry Falls
- Split Rock Lighthouse
- Tettegouche
- Temperance River
No campfires or charcoal grills are allowed at wayside areas along the North Shore including:
- Kodonce River
- Devil's Track
- Ray Berglund
- Caribou Falls
- Flood Bay
