An additional $30,000 will be awarded in Short Term Action Request (STAR) funds throughout the year for education and outreach, and coastal resource management projects.
Since 1999, Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program has awarded more than $8.8 million to local coastal partners to preserve, protect, develop, restore, and enhance coastal resources. The program’s goal is to balance natural resource protection and the needs of coastal communities to provide places to live, work and play. The coastal community consists of portions of 31 local units of government within its coastal boundary, which includes the lower St. Louis River and its estuary and the Lake Superior shoreline to the Canadian border.
The program selects projects annually with funds received through the Coastal Zone Management Act and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. The Governor’s Council on Minnesota’s Coastal Program, a 15-member citizen’s board, provided critical assistance in project selection.
The next funding cycle for the Coastal Program will begin in late August. For more information, contact Pat Collins at 1568 Highway 2, Two Harbors, MN 55616; phone (218) 834-6612; fax (218) 834-6639; or e-mail pat.collins@dnr.state.mn.us.
