DNR seeks volunteers to provide hummingbird flower Information

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are Minnesota's smallest bird. People enjoy attracting them with both sugar water feeders and by planting flowers to attract them to their yards. The DNR Nongame Wildlife Program is updating its list of the flower species and cultivars that attract hummingbirds – native or non-native. Each year there are new cultivars of garden flowers that prove attractive to hummingbirds, so the old list of hummingbird flowers that was published in the DNR's popular book "Landscaping for Wildlife" needs to be updated...

DNR looking for loggerhead

Officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are asking birders and outdoor enthusiasts to be on the lookout this summer and report sighting of a rare bird species, the loggerhead shrike. According to Carrol Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program supervisor, the statewide population of shrikes is declining. Loggerhead shrikes were once found throughout much of the unforested area of the state. Today their numbers are very low. Recent surveys have located fewer than a couple dozen nests of this threatened bird in Minnesota...

Apply now for special youth deer hunts

Hunters who wish to participate in a special youth deer hunt this fall may apply now wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold, or at the DNR License Center, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul. The deadline for applications is Friday, Aug. 18. Successful applicants will be notified in early September. There is no fee to apply, although successful applicants must purchase the appropriate deer hunting license prior to their hunt. The youth individual firearms and youth individual archery license, which cost only $14, are available to residents age 12 to 17...
