MADISON – People interested in finding out more about the quality of the air where they live in Wisconsin can now take advantage of an improved interactive Internet mapping system through the Department of Natural Resources Web site. The revised air monitoring Web pages take advantage of the DNR’s Geographic Information Systems capabilities that make current and past air quality data more accessible.
“The GIS maps on these pages are interactive and show a composite view of air quality in Wisconsin for ozone and particle pollution using the color coded Air Quality Index,” says Lloyd Eagan, director of the DNR Bureau of Air Management. “The statewide map shows the locations of DNR monitors and the real-time Air Quality Inedx for the county in which the monitor is located.”
Other features of the pages let the user also look at current monitoring numbers, and look back at data for any day since January 1, 2004.
The pages also allow the user to compare Wisconsin’s air quality to the rest of the country by providing a link to the federal interagency AIRNow website, found at http://airnow.gov. There are also links to the DNR pages where information regarding ozone action/clean air action days is posted and to air quality health advisory announcements.
The updated WISARDS web pages are the newest improvement to the tools available to the public that provide up-to-date information on Wisconsin’s air quality. The DNR also provides the toll-free Daily Air Hotline at 1-866-DAILY AIR (1-866-324-5924) that provides current air quality conditions by telephone. To get air quality health advisories delivered by e-mail as soon as they are issued, anyone can sign up through the DNR Web site. More information is available on the The DNR’s general Air Management Program Web page.
