BEAR HUNTER DEFENDS SELF WITH FRENCH BREAD
Conservation Officer (CO) Brent Speldrich (McGregor, MN) encountered a bear hunter busy checking his bait. After locating the hunter’s firearm, which was near Speldrich and away from the hunter, he let out a soft growl. The wide-eyed hunter, stood up at the speed of light, and started to grasp at anything he could find to defend himself. The only object he found was a loaf of what appeared to be French bread. After the hunter realized it was an officer, not a bear, both had a hearty chuckle...

CO Chris Vinton (Perham, MN) assisted an outraged neighborhood capture two suspects in the killing of an albino squirrel. The squirrel was a neighborhood novelty and treasure. A witness observed the two parked near a tree when they shot the squirrel. The officer went to the residence of one of the suspects and asked, "I guess you know why I’m here?" The suspect responded, "It was a stupid thing to do." A year ago the suspect took a black squirrel and wanted a white one to go with it.. View more great stories...

While returning home after working the Mississippi River, CO Bob Wallace (Kellogg) saw an unusual event. He observed a hawk flying low over some grassland. All of a sudden a hen turkey started flying towards the hawk. The hen turkey actually chased the hawk, climbing as the hawk climbed, until the hawk landed on a power pole. CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reports a doe and a new fawn crossed in front of him. They hurried into the woods as fast as the little fawn's legs would take them. Just as the CO was coming to the area where they crossed, a timber wolf came out of the ditch...

While CO Mike Hruza (Bemidji) was checking anglers, a fisherman pointed toward the shoreline where a dog was carrying a fawn by the neck. The officer and angler were able to get the fawn away from the dog. The bleating fawn was taken to shore and released. After a short time... 20 unbelievable stories

A concerned citizen leaving a gas station told CO Jeff Halverson (Staples) that there was an intoxicated man in the store. The individual was a passenger and not the driver of his car, so there was no issue with him. However, the concerned citizen had to be stopped 15 miles later because he failed to pay for his gas! Halvorson wrote, "I guess his concern for the drunk made him overlook paying his $50 gas bill." Read 16 wild stories from the Minnesota DNR...

CO Travis Muyres (Ham Lake) encountered an angler who was reluctant to show the officer the fish that was in his bucket. The angler then made a dash into his fish house in an attempt to dump the fish back down the hole. A brief wrestling match ensued and...

CO Brad Schultz (Center City) noted a very erratic set of vehicle tracks on road. A short time later the officer encountered a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver got out, nearly falling into the ditch. Officer noted a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath. A deputy was called and the driver was arrested for DWI, subsequent breath test of .31 BAC. As driver was being placed in squad he commented...

Officer Dale Ebel (Duluth) reported a truck's rear bumper prevented it from falling completely through the ice. The owner thought the ice had improved from the previous week. When asked why he thought that the man said that two weeks earlier he drove his ATV on the same lake and fell through. When asked where his ATV fell through the ice the man pointed to the same spot where the truck had gone through! Read more great stories...

A spearer explained to CO Tony Arhart (Deer River) that a large northern pike had ripped his live decoy and the harness loose and swam away. Fortunately for him the 36-inch fish was greedy and was speared by his buddy from a neighboring shelter. The missing decoy and the hardware were found in the pike’s stomach.
