beans
pour a can of pork and beans down your hole and let set over night. the next day, drill out the hole and start fishin!
Catch and Release
When fish are really biting it helps to show restraint, even if you’re releasing all you catch. A certain percentage of fish that are released die, even under the best circumstances. Limiting the number of fish caught and released will help reduce the number of fish that are accidentally killed.
Catch and Release - How To
To ensure that the fish you release survive, follow these simple guidelines: (1) use a barbless hook, (2) set the hook quickly, (3) play the fish quickly, (4) hold the fish firmly, but gently, while removing the hook, (5) use a needle nose pliers to remove the hooks, (6) cut the line if the fish is throat hooked, and, (7) gently slide the fish into the water.
Depth Reminder
When finding the depth below your ice hole, pinch line and thread thru bead to retain depth measurement. This will save a lot more time when resetting your line.
Driving on Frozen Lakes
If you are going to drive on the lakes, keep a door or windows open!!
Get That Line Back In The Hole
Using a permanent marker to indicate the line depth when drop line fishing can help you get right back where the fish are. When you find fish mark your line and you can put your bait or lure right back where the fish are everytime!
Hole Covers
I use spools for speaker wire cut in half (the large bulk kind) plastic ones only. They are 12 inches across the top and easily cover a 10 inch auger hole. I run my line down the center of spool and it doesn't freeze at all. I lost a couple tip-ups down the hole before coming up with this idea and have had great success with the hole covers. They are light weight, durable, and stack up well in a 5 gallon pail which I use as a tackle box/seat.

ice fishing, "feed"
A tip to help you catch more fish than the rest of your friends. While your fishing, throw some shrimp (body shells) into the hole, and stomp your feet. another would be to make the water move rapidly with a pole.
Jigging Coldwater
One of the biggest mistakes anglers make when cold-water vertical jigging is ripping their lures too rapidly.
Keeping hole warm in sub-zero conditions.
An old-timers trick to keep ones hole open when the temp dips is to take a coffee can and punch holes all around and fill half full of charcoal. Light this unit and set it next to your hole so it is barely overlapping. This will keep a trickle of warm water entering your hole.

Light
When it is dark out put a light or a lantern down the hole that will make fish bite. This may be illegal in some states.
Light Bite Crappies
Prime time. You are in 30 to 32 feet of water and you are ready for crappie action. Try taking off that bobber. Many time the crappie bite is so light that your bobber will never indicate a strike.
