How to Speak Winter-eeze
By Karl Seckinger :: 611 Views :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Tales from the Woods

So three guys walk into the local café at 6:15 AM. and take over a booth. The first guys sez, “I had four below last night”, to which the second replies, “me too”. Now we all know the third fellow can’t say, me three, so to keep the conversation from getting freezer burned he tosses out, “anybody know what the wind chill is?”...

Holding My Cofffee Cup - Reflections of the Winter to Come
By Karl Seckinger :: 543 Views :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Tales from the Woods

Holding my coffee cup, the chickadee outside my window takes my eyes across the yard in flitted flight. It lights softly in the feeder and commences hammering a sunflower seed. Two more zip in and everybody in the bird feeder is playing nicely together. Seeds for all, and room for all. So I just watch...

Somewhere in the Future a Baby Will Be Born
By Karl Seckinger :: 781 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Fishing - Trout and Salmon, Tales from the Woods

Somewhere in the future a baby will be born. Boy, Girl, no matter, and I have no preference. This little person will grow up and wonder, hopefully, as I have. I wonder if I like cigars, like my grandpa did. Then from my comfortable perch in heaven I will hit the “oh that’s a given” button. Since its heaven, I will also hit the” but no smoking till your old enough, switch”...

If I Just Had One More Hour - I Do
By Karl Seckinger :: 482 Views :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Tales from the Woods

Somebody upstairs really loves me. This November I get one more hour of November.  I haven’t quite decided if I’m going to cut wood with the time or take a nap. I could sneak in some pass shooting at ducks or...

Duck Slapped and Duck Blind
By Karl Seckinger :: 1373 Views :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Hunting - Waterfowl, Tales from the Woods

I drop the truck into four wheel drive and start to tip toe off the county road and follow an ancient logging trail. Last fall, when I was here, I don’t recall the logging trail so rough. I meander about and come to the sharp corner and here is a brand new county forest gate with a lock that’s locked tight. Oh for the love of progress. Man whose going to steal trees back here. Stupid gate...

Summer Crawls Away - But I'm Still Here
By Karl Seckinger :: 858 Views :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: Tales from the Woods

Summer crawls away in ripe tomatoes, picking blueberries, and one final warm rain. Fall strolls in on the heels of the first frost. Geese honking over head refresh the memories of spring goslings and draw my thoughts into a wedge migration of adult birds going south...

Crappies on a Bed of Wild Rice
By Karl Seckinger :: 976 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Learn How to Fish, Tales from the Woods

It’s no exotic fishing destination. Your standard four mile long man made flowage created by a county highway engineer’s worst nightmare. Just some road Designed and built many years ago to access central St. Louis County with the upper reaches of Lake County in northern Minnesota. This piece of road still burps in low spots old corduroy logs. I would not like to be...

By Karl Seckinger :: 945 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Hunting - General, Tales from the Woods

For a mid December Saturday the county roads will be not be plowed until way past noon.  We're going to have a white Christmas. I call my neighbor Bill and see if he wants to do some snowshoeing back to my shack and see if we can shoot some rabbits...
