If you can walk, you can snowshoe!
By Randy Johnson :: 2624 Views :: 0 Comments :: :: JustNorth Kids - Snow Sports

Probably the easiest way to begin snowshoeing is simply by going out and doing it.  There is no magic art, no special close required no sophisticated manual or rule book to read.  So simply rent or buy a pair of snowshoes dress for the elements and enjoy.

Snowshoes have been around for approximately 6000 years.  And they were probably the earliest form of transportation. Over the centuries different styles of snowshoes were designed for different types of snow conditions and terrain.  The first snowshoe’s were primarily designed for weight carrying capacity and tended to be a bit larger than the ones used today.  Over the past 15 years, snowshoe evolution has completely revolutionize the snowshoe itself.  Today's snowshoes are much smaller and easier to use not to mention the fact the weight is dramatically decreased.  Snowshoeing is probably the easiest and least expensive sport to enjoy.

What to look for in renting or purchasing a pair of snowshoes.

There are three basic types of snowshoes available: recreational/ hiking type, aerobic/fitness and hiking/backpacking.  First let's look at the recreational/ hiking type snowshoe, this is the basic overall best pick for newcomers.  These are typically light, have easy to use bindings, and are tough.  The second type of snowshoe is the aerobic/fitness these are basically set up for snow runners and people who like to cross -- train.  These type of snowshoes are typically smaller and thinner and designed extremely tough.  Often these are used in city parks were the trails are not snow blown.  The third hiking/backpacking type snowshoes are my favorite these are strong aluminum frames with durable material for flotation also the bindings are typically set up for all types of boots.

In all three cases, you'll find snowshoes priced from a $100 up to as high as you are willing to spend!  Some retailers offer a package deals that provide the polls and snowshoes together.  Keep in mind, you do not need snowshoe polls.  However, they do help out quite a bit.  The snowshoe poll allows you more control and stability when going through heavily wooded areas or up and down hills.

Finally, and probably the most important factor in looking at renting or purchasing a pair of snowshoes is a size.  Read the label carefully!  The most common sizes, measured in inches are 25, 30 and 36 inches but your needs may be different.

We're two-goal snowshoeing.

If it's covered in snow -- -- you can snowshoe it!

Many resorts offer winter vacationing packages, mainly because this is their slow time, and most of these are located very close to state forest, which are prime snowshoeing areas.  However, if you look across any state that experiences snow,  you'll see there are national parks, state parks County tax forfeited lands, and even designated snowshoe trails.  I myself spent a lot of time in state and county forest land.  Often in the same territory, that I grouse hunt.

Although there is a thrill in walking deep into a state forest all by yourself,  it is a good idea to bring a partner with. Some other items that are wise to bring with are a GPS system, a compass and of course plenty of water.

Basic tips.

Always check your gear before you go

If you must go were snow mobiles play stay -- out of their way.

Take frequent breaks to drink water and eat something

If you're leading in a group- take turns

If you're following in a group- stay in the steps of the person in front of you

If you have an energetic person in your group, put them in the lead!

bring a map

What to wear.

As far as footwear is a good idea to wear a waterproof hiking style boot.  Keep in mind that they need to be warm enough for the conditions you will be experiencing. Wool socks or a wool/silk combination are also a good idea.  And if you plan on blazing a trail or going into deep snow  it's always a good idea to wear a pair of Gaiters.  These help keep snow out of your boots and keep your feet warm and dry.  Clothing is simple, dress in layers using the same clothing you use for ice fishing or hunting in cold weather.  Make sure the layers can be taken off  with ease as in some cases you will get quite warm walking great distances.  Long underwear is always a good idea when experiencing winter temperatures!  And remember to wear a high quality gloves, hat and bring along a good pair of sunglasses.

For most of us, our fondest memory of the North country is spending a summer's night walking down a long pine covered trail.  For me.,  It's the fall covered trails during grouse season that intrigue me the most.  These very same places become some of the most wonderful, peaceful environments during the winter season.  One of the best things about snowshoeing is that you are able to maneuver through places country skiers, snowmobiles and others simply can't go.  You'll see things most people simply don't see.  You can easily travel through thickly/wooded and/or steep terrain.  So strap on a pair and explore!

See you in the woods!
