Cooking over a campfire is one of those things in life that you can't explain to someone who has never done it. Catch the aroma of food cooking, mixed with smoke from burning firewood and fresh air ---- it doesn't get any better!! Read on for a variety of Outdoor Cooking methods and food variations to keep everyone in your camping party happy.
Remember to always use caution around your campfire or camp stove to avoid being burned or incurring other injuries.
Some methods of Campout Cooking:
- Box Oven lined with aluminum foil (details in a separate article)
- Directly in your campfire
- Green hardwood stick gathered from surrounding area and carved point on one end
- Hotdog Forks
- Grate secured above your campfire
- Dutch Oven
- Pie Irons
- Camp Stove
- Boiling in water kettle

Breakfast in a Brown Paper Bag
Start with a luncheon sized brown paper bag. Cut one strip of bacon in half and lay the two pieces in the bottom. Crack open one egg and carefully place it directly into the bag on top of the bacon. Close the bag by folding over the top a couple of times. Insert a sharp pointed stick through the fold and have about 3 inches below the stick and above the food. Hold the bag over hot coals in your campfire; keep the bag high enough that it doesn't catch on fire (at least 5"). It usually cooks in about 8 to 10 minutes, so check at that time by removing the bag from the heat using an oven mitt, fold open to check that the egg has cooked through. If not done, refold paper bag and hold over hot coals for an additional 2 to 3 minutes and check again. When done, tear the top off the bag or fold it down, grab a fork and eat right out of the bag. The bag will be greasy, so don't set it on your pants leg.
Add 2 pieces of bacon or 2 eggs.
Add a handful of frozen hash browns (thawed) or diced fresh potatoes on top of the bacon.
Add salt and pepper, or spices of choice.

This is a great meal to get your camping party motivated to in the morning, as each person gets to custom make their own.
Place potatoes, scrambled eggs (uncooked), sausage and spices in aluminum foil. Wrap securely. Place on coals in your campfire for approximately 15 minutes. Turn and rotate as needed, until cooked through.
Hot Dog Delight
Place a hot dog on a hot dog fork or one of your homemade wood sticks, and wrap a slice of bacon around it. Hold the bacon in place with a toothpick. Broil over hot coals in your campfire, being careful to hold it high enough over your coals, so it won't burn. When the hot dog and bacon are cooked through, remove the toothpick and enjoy right off the stick or place it in a bun with your favorite condiments. Fun to make and eat!!
