Remind the Government of the 2nd Amendment
Due to the current presidential stand on Gun Laws, USA Today is running a Quick Question on-line. IT simply asks, Does the 2nd Amendment give individuals the right to bear arms? It is frustrating to me that...

Playing the Odds
Even if a weighted lottery were in place, many hunters would still never get one of these licenses in their lifetime. The application period for North Dakota moose, elk and bighorn sheep licenses is on the horizon. While the prospect of drawing one of these once-in-a-lifetime “big three” licenses is mostly a long shot, thousands of hunters are eager to participate every year...

After my very first two days of elk hunting in Colorado, I had put on the world’s biggest hike, and had the world’s worst illness. Things could only get better for me. A couple of the guys yesterday managed to get a couple of elk right before the nasty snowstorm. They got them in the canyon down by the creek. They were busy packing out elk on the low end of the property, and I made another hike toward the perch. From the bottom side. You’d think a guy would learn…

The second morning of the official elk hunt had as high of expectations as we did on day one. The first day I followed a trail I didn’t know I could find and walked farther and higher and spent more time in a Rocky Mountain Wind Tunnel than anybody else in the camp. And it was fun. I saw a ton of elk that first day, but during this late season cow hunt, I didn’t have any that were in the range of my comfort level...

The Survey Says?
With the final shots of North Dakota’s bird hunting seasons behind us as of the close of turkey hunting on Jan. 11, we're actually only weeks away from the opening of the 2009 spring snow goose conservation season on Feb. 21. Beyond that, the spring turkey season is only a couple of months out and much of the Game and Fish Department’s planning process is kicking into gear right now to provide the framework for the fall seasons...

It’s time to get ready to hunt, even though we won’t be leaving camp for over two hours. I jump out of the top bunk in our six-person bedroom. I try to sneak out to the kitchen, but stub my pinky toe on a .50 cal ammo can that holds somebody’s hunting supplies...

How To Create a European Skull Mount
I'm blessed to have a decent income, and a workshop big enough to help my fellow hunters with a place to hang a deer, or work on a vehicle, or as of late get out the cooker and whip up a batch of 'antler soup', not a soup you would want to eat but rather a mix of salt, borax laundry booster and a little scented dish soap to cook a couple of skulls for European style mounts...

Years After Hunter Safety
Fall was a combination of friends, doves, football, pheasants, ducks and more football. For that reason, to this day autumn remains my favorite time of year. It combines my love of everything outdoors sandwiched between cool edges of the day and the warmth of a...

Conservation Officer Tales - April 2008

CO Mark Fredin (Aurora, MN) ran a license check on what appeared to be an  abandoned fish house on a northern Minnesota lake. The check showed that the  fish house, which belonged to a 92-year-old man, may have been stolen more than  20 years ago from southern Minnesota. 18 more exciting stories...

Finding hunting success through PLOTS

As you return to the fields this fall, if last year’s numbers are any indication, there's a good chance that at some point you'll find yourself hunting on the other side of a triangular yellow sign that designates the Private Land Open to Sportsmen or PLOTS program...
