The walleye action picked up this last week in the Brainerd Lakes area. The best action was in 12-14 feet of water. The best catches were made using a red-tail chub on a lindy rig. Run the break-lines with your electronics until you see a school of fish. Try and hover on the school and let Mr. Red-tail do his work. If the action is a little slow, just slide in closer to the weeds. You'll need a stick to beat back the bass. The bass action remained strong throughout the Brainerd area. The majority of the bass are located in 6 to 12 feet of water on the weeds flats. These fish are very numerous and have been in the 1-2 lb. range. Good baits for the flats have been spinner-baits and crank-baits. The larger bass have been located deeper or under the docks. Use a jig/pig or jig/worm to tempt these bucket-mouths. The northern pike action was good once again this week. A spin rig and a sucker minnow continues to be the best lure right now. The sunfish action remained strong again this week. You'll find the nicer bluegills on the top of sunken islands that top out in 10 to 14 feet of water. Black jigs tipped with wax-worms have provided most of the action.

Take care until next week!

This week's cold and wet weather kept the majority of local fisherman off the waters in the Brainerd Lakes area. The few fishermen that were willing to brave the elements, however, did experience a good bite on Pelican Lake. A 3/8 oz chartreuse jig with a rainbow chub was the ticket for catching a bunch of good "eyes" on Pelican in 28 to 35 feet water.

There was some fair action on Gull Lake, but most of these fish were on the small side. The local duck hunters are still waiting for the northern birds to arrive and grouse hunters have been reporting fair to poor success so far this season.

There are still plenty of leaves on the trees in the area. But the peak color phase is now definitely behind us. The recent cold snap is sure to help speed the departure of the remaining leaves and bring the northern ducks down.
