Warmer than normal temperatures have made for some questionable ice on some lakes in the Brainerd area. Two snowmobiles fell through on Pelican Lake this week. Caution is advised. Stop in and visit a local bait shop for the most up to date information before heading out on a new lake. The walleye action has been fair in the evenings. Gull, Pelican and Whitefish lakes have been giving up a few fish in the evenings. Mark your calendars for the Jaycees annual ice fishing extravaganza. The money goes to a good cause. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) CROSBY AREA Walleye reports have been limited to a few fish coming off Rabbit Lake, Pelican Lake, and Serpent Lake in 22 feet of water. There's no problem catching northern pike on shiner minnows along the 12- to 15-foot weed edges of Klinker Lake, Upper Dean Lake, and Mahnomen Lake. The best sunfish and crappie action is taking place in 11 to 14 feet of water on Black Hoof Lake and Little Black Hoof Lake. Oars ‘n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 Outdoor News |

The walleye bite continues to be good in the Brainerd Lakes Area. North Long, Pelican, and Gull Lake have been producing walleyes in the evenings in 18-26 feet of water. The best locations have been the mid lake structures. Jigging and tip ups have both been producing fish. If you’re looking for northern pike action, head to Lake Edwards, or North Long. The pike have been biting just of the weed line in 16-20 feet of water. Several of the pike in the recent week have been large, with one fish over twenty. The only bite that’s been somewhat slow has been the crappie bite. The ice in the area continues to be questionable for larger vehicle traffic on some lakes. This week’s temperatures and rain didn’t help. Make sure that you check with a local bait shop before you head out on the area lakes.

CROSSLAKE Happy New Year from Crosslake. Area lakes have at least a good foot of ice and travel by snowmobile or ATV is easy. Remember to watch out when traveling near channels and known current areas, there is about 7 inches of new snow. Walleyes are playing hard to get but the persistent anglers are catching some fish during the late afternoon period. Jigging spoons tipped with a rainbow or fathead minnow will produce some hits. Pelican and North Long lakes are reported to have a good bite. Northern pike action remains good with anglers finding fish along drop-offs and points. Crappie action has been good on the smaller lakes. Best bite being in the afternoon to dark. Try crappie minnows and a small glow jig in 12-18 feet of water.

NISSWA The walleyes started 2006 in a great way, “Hungry!” Anglers are experiencing good results on the mid lake humps and points out on Gull Lake and Pelican Lake. There is a decent bite out on the main lake of North Long. Jigging spoons or Custom Jig’s demons tipped with a minnow head have been producing some nice fish in 16-24 feet. Set lines like a tip-up or bobber baited with a golden shiner has also caught some walleyes in a bit shallower water. Northern pike have been active in 10-15 feet on Gull, North Long and Lake Edwards. Tip-ups and shiners or big sucker minnows have worked best. The panfishing hasn’t been real good yet, they seem to be a little scattered. With a busy weekend on the ice they were a little picky and holding tight to the bottom. A few crappies have been caught in deeper water. Crappie minnows or eurolarvae are the best bets. Ice thickness has varied from lake to lake from 7-13 inches, so please use caution when heading out.

Golden shiners or rainbow minnows are turning walleyes in 17 to 30 feet of water on Gull Lake, North Long Lake, Round Lake, and Pelican Lake. There’s been some consistent northern pike action in seven to 15 feet of water on Gull, North Long, and Lake Edwards. A glow jig tipped with a rosy red minnow is turning crappies on Round, Nisswa Lake, and Lake Hubert. Sunfish also can be had on these lakes with Eurolarvae or waxworms.

There’s a morning and evening walleye bite taking place on Serpent Lake with shiner minnows in 26 to 28 feet of water. Good-sized northern pike have been tough to find, but panfish have bit well on lakes such as Perry, Little Blackhoof, Mahnomen, and Little Mahnomen. The best crappie action has taken place in 18 to 20 feet of water, while sunfish are being found as shallow as eight feet.

The bright news is that the walleyes are still biting on North Long and Gull Lake. Good catches are taking place in the evenings in 16-20 feet of water. Shiner minnows on set lines continue to catch the most fish being reported in the evenings. The northern pike were active this week as well, there were several nice pike speared this week on area lakes. The largest was just over sixteen pounds and came from Gull. The sunfish and crappie bite continues to be hit or miss on the area lakes.

Colored hooks or jigging spoons tipped with golden shiners or rainbow minnows are producing walleyes in 17 to 32 feet of water on Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, and North Long Lake. Large sucker minnows will turn northern pike on the same lakes in eight to 24 feet of water. The best crappie and sunfish reports are coming from 10 to 12 feet of water on lakes such as Round, Nisswa, and Hubert.

A few walleyes are coming off Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake in 33 to 35 feet of water. Small shiner minnows have worked best during lowlight periods of the day. Crappies are being pulled in 40 feet of water on Clearwater Lake and in shallower water at the northeast bays of Cedar Lake. June Lake, Nokay Lake, Big Mahnomen Lake, and Black Hoof Lake are producing sunfish in 15 to 20 feet of water.
