A Lindy jigging spoon and minnow head is the best bet for walleyes on the 18- to 32-foot breaks of lakes such as Big Cormorant, Pelican, Cotton, and Lizzie. Find some green weeds on Floyd Lake, Big Toad Lake, Prairie Lake, and Lake Lida and they should be holding the active panfish. Dick Beardsley's Guide Service www.fishingscene.com Outdoor News |

Getting to your favorite spots is still quite a problem because of the heavy snow and slush that is out on the ice. We received another 6-10 inches of snow again in the last week and the slush is everywhere. Most folks are walking out or at the most snowmobiles or ATV's. There are some folks driving out on some of the lakes but extreme caution must be used! The walleye bite continues good on several lakes in the area. Big Cormorant, Pelican, Lizzie, Franklin, Big Detroit, and Big Pine are kicking out fish during the low light hours on Lindy Rattl'n Spoons and minnow heads in 18-32 feet. Northern pike are hitting tip-ups and shiners along the weedlines on area lakes. The panfish bite continues good on Little Detroit, Little Cormorant, Prairie, Floyd, Cotton and Big Toad. Lindy Frosty Glow jigs and waxworms are working well.

The late afternoon and evening hours are providing steady walleye action on Big Cormorant Lake, Pelican Lake, Lizzie Lake, Big Pine Lake, Detroit Lake, Lake Lida, and Cotton Lake. There’s been some perch caught on Little Cormorant Lake and Height of Land Lake. The best lakes for sunfish and crappies remain Little Detroit, Big Toad, Prairie, Lizzie, Floyd, Cotton, and Round. Northern pike are hitting sucker minnows under tip-ups on all the aforementioned lakes.

It’s like a broken record, but the number one concern is use caution on the ice here in the Detroit Lakes area. Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon is advising no vehicle travel on any lakes in the area. Heavy snow and slush on the ice will be tough to get good ice even if it does get real cold again. Travel by foot, ATV, or snowmobile is your best bet. The walleye bite has slowed down a bit this past week. Big Cormorant, Pelican, Lizzie, Lida and Franklin have been the best producers. Lindy jigging spoons and jigging Rapala’s with minnow heads have worked the best along the sharp breaks in 18-22 feet. The panfish bite is going good on Little Detroit, Floyd, Big Toad, Prairie, Long and Crystal. The crappie bite has been best in the late afternoon into the evening with the bluegills going all day long. Lindy Pounders or Frosty Glow Jigs have been working well tipped with a waxworm. Look for some green weeds and you will find the biggest concentration of fish. Please remember to practice selective harvesting, by doing so we will continue to have great fishing for years to come! Have a safe day out on the ice!

Look for crappies and sunfish to be active early and late in the day on lakes such as Little Detroit, Floyd, Big Toad, and Prairie. Walleye action remains sporadic with the area’s best reports coming off Lake Lida, Pelican Lake, Big Cormorant Lake, and Lake Lizzie in 18 to 22 feet of water. The best bite has taken place during the evening hours along the sharp breaks.
