The walleye action remained slow again this week in the Brainerd Lakes area. The majority of the local anglers have shifted gears and are now chasing panfish. Last weeks warm weather made for some great days on the ice. The best depth for sunfish has been in 6 to 12 feet. Search the weed beds for open pockets. A small teardrop tipped with a waxworm, or eurolarva, has been a good bait. Sunfish can be very soft biters during this time of year. Make sure that you are fishing with the smallest bobber that you can get away with, or use a spring bobber instead. The pike action was strong again week, although the number of larger fish was down. Good numbers are still being caught on the Whitefish Chain. The best water depths have been from 16 to 20 feet, but most of the pike are now swimming well off the bottom. It's time to drop a big sucker minnow 6 to 10 feet below the ice and then sit back to see what happens.

We’ll see you on the ice!
