10/26/04 The moon will be full tomorrow but I don't know if we will get to see much of it through the clouds. The fish that we were on last night were quite active but we were only able to keep 5 of them. The majority were small. We caught all of our fish on 3/8 ounce fireball's tipped with a rainbow chub and a stinger. We fished from 30-45 feet on Gull. Butch was on Gull in the morning and North Long in the afternoon. He found a feeding school late in the day on North Long in 38 feetof water. Most of the area lakes have been "spotty", one day they are good and the next not so good! My clock is starting to tell me that I should be honing my hunting skills because the "rut" is really close. I will be hunting Camp Ripley this weekend so hopefully Mr. Big comes by. Remember to book your ice fishing trip now. Courtesy of: Walleyedan's Guide Service and Fish House Rentals walleyedan@brainerd.com 218-839-5598 10/11/04 Fishing has been good! Stable weather=Good fishing!! The walleyes in Gull are still snappin!! Lots of fish in the 8.5-12.5 category, but we are also putting some nice ones in the boat. And of course putting most of them back when they are over 20 inches. North Long, Whitefish and Pelican are still going strong also!! Jigs and rainbows and rigs and redtails are the key to success. The fish are deep during the day, but you will find them up in the shallows morning, evening and at night time!! Have a good week, Walleyedan |

11/15/04 The rifle season is over. In this area. Next will be the muzzleloaders which I believe starts in two weeks or so. This weather has been unbelievable!! I absolutely love it!! The only problem is that I have ice fishing on my mind. But I guess I'll just have to have patience. I am heading back out on the water for a couple of trips today and tomorrow so hopefully I can locate some hungry walleyes. I have heard that Pelican continues to produce some nice fish along with North Long. There aren't a lot of people fishing so I guess I better get out and find out myself. If time is on my side, I'm going to continue my quest for a buck. I have helped drag a couple of nice ones out of the woods, but it's just not the same. December 7, 2004 We have some ice on the area lakes but things are still a little sketchy. I personally have not seen any fishermen/women out on any lake but I was down at the Ice Fishing Show all weekend. My wife said there were a few people out on the 371 bay of North Long on Sunday. I have also heard other reports of people being out on some other area lakes. Gull is still wide open but the bays have some floating sheets moving around. I heard that it's supposed to be 12 degrees tomorrow night. That's a good thing!! Make sure that you use your head if you are going to get out in the next day or so, play it on the safe side. First ice is always an exciting time, but if you aren't careful it might be the last ice you see. I picked up some new spoons from JR's Tackle this past weekend and they look and sound like they are going to be walleye slayers. I also listened to the Lowrance rep give a little seminar on their ice box and I think I'm sold. The thing about the Lowrance unit is that it has the mapping capability. There were so many new products down there, it can make your head spin. Just what I need!! If any of you are interested in a new permanent house (on wheels), we will have one for you in two weeks. Tip of the week: Purchase your extravaganza tickets before the 1st of January and they are $35.00, after the 1st they are 45.00. There is also a VIP dinner on Friday that is limited to 100 people so reserve your tickets now!! Courtesy of: Walleyedan's Guide Service and Fish House Rentals walleyedan@brainerd.com 218-839-5598 |

December 13, 2004 It's cold, finally!! It was about 6 degrees this morning when I woke, but the only problem is that the wind continues to blow. What we need is another night like last night minus the wind and we will be on our way. The lakes in the area that had a cover on them and going to be in fairly good shape. There was still a layer of snow on most of them so we still need to be careful. As of this morning, I have still not been on any ice (except for my driveway and some parking lots). The smaller bays and lakes are you best bets right now and I do know of people that have been on parts of Pelican, Edward, North Long and a few others. This will be the week you will start to see houses moving out, so be prepared. I had initially picked the 18th as the date I would have a house out, and depending on what happens this week we'll see. I have been booking quite a few rental houses and also sold a new one last week, so people are getting anxious and hopefully we will keep making ice. Sherree, who owns S&W Bait is well stocked with the swimmers so stop by on your way out. Good luck with getting all your things done before Christmas and I'll get you the report next week. Brrrrrrrr!! 10 below is the temperature but the wind isn't blowing yet. There has been a truck out on Round Lake the past few days if that tells you anything about the lakes. Maybe it just tells you that there are still some people with serious guts or something else!! I was out on Round Sunday and we had 7 maybe 8 inches, caught to Walters on JR's jigging spoon and a minnow head. I will get my first house out today after making a batch of caramels and getting my alignment done (on my truck) and hair cut (on my head). Way too many things going on, crazy world!! I haven't checked ice depths all over, but I will say that we are good to go!! I'm sure some of the smaller lakes have 12 inches, Gull I would guess has an average depth of 8 inches. There are a number of permanent houses out and about, but I figured being safe is the key. Pelican has been good! With the bitter cold temps hanging with us for the next few days, it will slow things down (both people and probably the "bite"). I believe the full moon is on Christmas and it is going to start warming up there after so the fishing will be good. I have a lot of work to do, but the houses will be out soon. So if you are making plans to head north, give us a call and we will try to set you up. Buy your tickets for the extravaganza now and save 10.00 dollars. It's coming!! January 22nd is the day!! January 9, 2005 I knew it!! I bet on the Vikes to win the Superbowl about 2 weeks ago and now they are on there way thanks to Randy Moon (I mean Moss). I know that doesn't have much to do with fishing, but once they beat Philly it's going to make the Extravaganza weekend even more exciting. Sorry cheeser's, 2 was enough for this season!! Fishing, it's sporadic!! I have houses on Gull and Round. Round has been slightly better, but it's not super consistent. We have been fishing mainly 19-32 feet and it seems that morning and evening are once again the happening times. I have been continuing to move my houses around to find the "honey hole", but so far I haven't found it. We just got another 3 inches of snow tonight so once that starts to blow around a little it's going to make travel a little tougher. We have about 20 inches of ice and with the forecast of some artic air coming in for late this week, we might have 3 feet by January 22 (Extravaganza day). I have been looking forward to the 15th annual Extravaganza since last winter, but this year is going to be pretty action packed. It's all going to kick off on Friday the 21st when I guide the Ice Team on "media day". I did the same thing last year up on Pelican, but Gull is a bit more familiar to me and I'm really looking forward to it. After showing the media some of the new products and hopefully some fish, it will be on to the V.I.P. dinner at Grand View Lodge (tickets still available) where a gathering of fishing pros and a number of people from the industry will give some tips that might help you land "Jingles". "Jingles" by the way is the largest walleye in Gull Lake. Then on Saturday it's game day!! We will have our gathering, along with the editor of a Nationally known magazine, out to try and get on the board!! Full Moon!! Hooooooooooooo!! Last night I got a call from a couple of die hard full moon walleye fishermen that wanted to know if I would be able to set them up near a shallow flat to see if they could catch a few. They got here about 10:00 p.m. and I got them all set up. I haven't talked with them this a.m., but the way the deer were moving last night I think that the fish may have been doing the same. We'll see!! The Extravaganza is over. It was once again the most smoothly run show in town!! We caught one walleye amongst 16 or so of us. We were set up in 40 feet of water and had some nice rocky's caught right around us. The winning walleye was just over 3 pounds and that lucky (skilled) lady drove home in the new Ford pick-up. The weekend was so busy, it was a little blurry!! I have been telling people it was the busiest weekend of my life (I'm pretty certain it was). Lack of sleep, a zillion things on my plate, a blizzard all made for quite the weekend. We caught a few small walleyes and a few perch during the "media event" on Friday, but overall that was a good time. Thanks Ice Team for setting up the village and making the weekend fun and a great success! They are a really nice group of guys and gals!! I haven't been able to get out myself, but some of my renters are catching a few fish. I have to get all my houses gathered up for a big party on Wednesday so hopefully we can put them on some fish!! My houses are all on Gull at the present time, and with all the snow we have I think that is where they will stay. Roads are plowed, so if you would like to rent, please call. I apologize to a few of you renters for not being able to spend any time with you, it was a nutty weekend! Tip of the week: If you are looking for a tip-up, try the Artic Fisherman. It will last you a lifetime!! Have a nice week, Walleyedan Courtesy of: Walleyedan's Guide Service and Fish House Rentals walleyedan@brainerd.com 218-839-5598 |

Hi everyone!! I just got done plopping down a house in deep no where (like the Mille Lacs guides would say). But it's on Gull. We will see what happens, but it was one of the last straws for the finicky walleye bite. Maybe "Jingles" will be there, who knows!! I am going to fish panfish tonight with my Uncle and we will see what happens. I am thinking of a couple of different lakes but I will make the last minute decision on that. I have heard very few walleye reports, but numerous good panfish reports. I had a slew of fishermen out this past weekend in the houses and all that was caught were some perch, rockbass and a couple of walleyes (biggest was 17 inches) and it was caught at 4:30 a.m. in 30 feet of water. There are so many young perch in the lake (Gull) right now that my theory is that the fish are belly to the bottom and waiting to have the biological clock tell them to migrate to spawning grounds. The weather has been beautiful and it makes it nice for working outside. If we get a few more days of this mild weather, we will be able to travel all over once again. It's kind of tough going once you get off road. So for now, Walleyedan is going to become Panfishdan and I am going to geterdone!! Later on readers, Panfish Tip of the week: Block up your houses (fish houses) because it sounds like winter will be back next week. Chiseling Sucks!!! With two more weeks remaining in the walleye/northern season, I'm hoping they decide it's time to start snapping. I have been setting a few groups up on panfish as of late and most have been happy. It seems the crappies and sunnies are in favor of Eurolarvae vs. minnows. I like to tip my jigs with about 3 larvae (preferably different colored ones). It always used to be waxies, but since I started using Eurolarvae, waxies have been a worm of the past. Remember to try glow baits this time of year. Sometimes when you get a lot of snow cover and it gets tougher to see, a glowing target is a good thing. Vexilar's and Aqua Vu's are fun to use this time of year when you are on panfish. I can't wait until the fish are up in the shallow stuff where I can lay down and watch them with the Eigen Vu! It doesn't get any better than laying down and seeing a huge "slap" (not "slab") come cruising in and inhale your bait. Just make sure you have good rain gear so you don't have to hang the trip up early. Area lakes that might be worth a shot are Upper Gull, Margret, Love, Wilson Bay of Gull Lake, Hubert, Gladstone, Upper Hay, Sibley, Green, Rice, Merrifield Bay of North Long to name a few more than a few. Tip of the week: Give it up, it's Lent!! Hook'em, Danno Courtesy of: Walleyedan's Guide Service and Fish House Rentals walleyedan@brainerd.com 218-839-5598 |

February 15, 2005 I hope your Valentine's Day was sweet! We took it pretty easy around here. It's hard for me to believe how fast the time is going by. People are planning their summer vacations and we are starting to book a number of guide trips. I am looking forward to the open water season about as much as I am the turkey hunting season. Can't wait!! We still have a few days before the walleye/northern/bass season closes. It closes on Sunday the 20th and the walleye season will re-open on the 14th of May. I had a few groups out over the weekend and things didn't change a whole lot. The group that went after the crappies had some success, but the walleyes were few and fairly far between. All of the houses did pick-up at least a couple walleyes but the fish are just not that hungry. Maybe this weekend!!! I still have a few groups of ice fishermen/women coming up to try their skill. In fact, I will be spending some time out on the ice later today in preparation. I will also be pulling a few of my other houses off for the season. Houses on wheels are kind of the key. Skid houses have done the trick for many years, but the ease of moving the other houses is where it's at. I'm getting older and weaker, so I'll have to start using my brain a little more often and save my back. I have a few houses for sale, so if you are looking forward to next ice season, give me a call and I will give you the low down. Tip of the week: Plan your vacations now, things are starting to fill-in!! Good morning. I'm going to make this quick, because I am heading for Upper Red Lake this morning with Panfishpfaff to see if we can do what people have been doing for a number of years now......catch some "slaps"!! Big slappin crappies!! The moon is full and despite only getting about 4 hours of shut-eye I'm going. First I need to shovel the nieghbors driveway, fun! My houses are still out and only one thus far is on some crappies. It has produced some fish, but it's not going crazy. Walleye season closed last Sunday. May 14th is the next legal day to fish them around the Brainerd area, so book now!! I hope you have a nice remainder of the week and I'll give you a Red report next time. Bye for now!! Tip of the week: Spring training has started, that must mean open water is coming so we better get things ready. They are off!! My fish houses are on land and ready for what's next. I'm not quite sure what that is going to be, but I do know that it is a good feeling to have this past season under my belt or where ever it may be. It was a long one!! I'm going to rent houses next year, but with a new plan. They say "live and learn" and that's what I'm hoping to do so I can have a good plan for next winter. Houses have to be off by midnight tonight around our area, they have another couple of weeks north of hwy. 2, which is up in the Burrmedji area (Bemidji). I hung out in Bemidji last Thursday as I was coming back from Upper Red Lake. The people at Tabers baitshop were very accommodating. We fished Red all day Wednesday and caught 14 crappies, 2 walleyes and a perch. It was something that I have wanted to do for a long time and now I wished I had experienced it a while ago. I've talked with a few guys/guides that rent houses up there and I have a slight interest in getting in on the gig! This year yet? Maybe!! So, if you interest in renting a sleeper for the remaining two weeks let me know. I will be hanging on to a couple of my houses, but I do have about 5 or 6 for sale ranging from $700.00-$8,000.00. If you are interested you can see them at Ernie's or S&W. The house that I had out on Gull produced a few nice crappies. The action should only get better from here on out, but it you want to rent we will have to either tow it to Red or bring it out for the day. Let me know what you want to do. The crappie action around here has been O.K., but now I think I have been spoiled. Kind of lake going to Canada during the open water season. It may sound like we hammered them on Red, but that is definitely not true. It is the size of the fish that has got me so excited. We caught our fish 5 miles out from Westwind Resort. Puddlejumper Pfaff was the crappie king, but I wasn't to far behind. I think if we would have had another auger along, we would have caught more (long story). Anyway, if you want to fish give me a call!! People are getting the spring fever, were are booking open water trips almost everyday!! Get your spot reserved!! Tip of the week: Thinking about getting a fish house on wheels? This is the time of year to get one!! After all, don't you need a place to put all the tax money!! Have a nice week, Walleyedan Courtesy of: Walleyedan's Guide Service and Fish House Rentals walleyedan@brainerd.com 218-839-5598 |
