The Brainerd Lakes Area experienced some really nice weather these past few days, unfortunately I wasn't unable to capitalize on it and take the opportunity to make it out on the ice. Area anglers are reporting that sunfish are hitting on your smaller lakes in 6 to 10 feet of water during the day, using waxies or finessing them with plastics. Crappies can be found 25 to 30 feet during the day, but have also heard that they are starting to move up into 14 to 16 feet of water on the edges of the weed beds about an hour before dark. A simple float and a crappie minnow is as much gear as you need for them. As March moves on, the panfish should only continue to get better. As for those anglers that are waiting for open water, don't forget about the Mississippi this time of year. A friend of mine has been crushing walleyes and saugers in the wing damns down there using a Max Gap jig and a new Munchies Ringworm. Courtesy of Chad Rau www.BreezyGuide.com |

The panfish action continues to heat up in the Brainerd Lakes area. With the longer days and milder temps, this past week has been great for sitting out on the ice and catching some fish. The crappie bite has moved shallower, with most of the action taking place right off the weed edge in 12-18 feet of water. Key locations have been the major points of the larger cabbage beds. Cut a bunch of holes along the break and then “leapfrog” until you make contact with the active fish. A glow demon tipped with a crappie minnow has been a good bait choice once the fish have been located. The sunfish action has remained constant. The majority of the sunfish are still located in the weeds, but the larger ’gills have moved out to the edge. Don’t be surprised to find a few nice ’gills mixed right in with the crappies. So grab a bucket and go enjoy a little Minnesota “spring”. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Spring fever sure kicked into high gear last weekend. It was absolutely beautiful in the Brainerd Lakes area, and the fishing report was great. The crappies and sunfish are really going good right now. They are staging right at the edge of the drops waiting to move shallow this spring. Anglers are catching crappies that are suspended in 10-20 feet. These suspended fish are sometimes only a couple of feet below the ice so don’t be shy to raise your baits up a little. The best baits have been small ice jigs tipped with larvae or a waxworm. Puddle jumpers have also worked well in recent days. Small bays or backwaters adjacent to deeper water are some areas to key on right now. For sunfish just move a little shallower. This bite should continue for the next month. Sunfish continue to be caught in six to 12 feet of water on Nisswa Lake, Roy Lake, and Round Lake throughout the day. These same lakes are the area’s best bets for crappies as well. The majority of nice crappies are still suspending over deep water and hitting minnows or Eurolarvae on red glow jigs. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

CROSBY AREA Mission Lake, Serpent Lake, and Big Mahnomen Lake are the area’s best bets for crappies in seven to 20 feet of water. These fish have bit well during lowlight periods of the day on small minnows or waxworms and a glow jig. Look to Serpent, Big Mahnomen and Little Mahnomen Lake for sunfish during the day in 12 to 18 feet of water. Oars ‘n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

The colder temperatures at night have kept the ice conditions good in the Brainerd Lakes area. Local anglers continue to drive on most of the area lakes. The easy travel and good fishing have kept many anglers out on the ice. The crappies continue to move shallower. Key locations have been just outside the weeds in 12-18 feet of water. These crappies have been suspended anywhere from 4-10 feet off the bottom. This action should only improve as we move closer to April. NISSWA Not many anglers on the lakes this week. But the few that have been out have been catching a couple crappies. It hasn’t been great but if you move around you can find them. Smaller bays and smaller lakes have provided the best action. Sometimes it pays to get off the beaten path. The best crappie bite has been from 4:00 p.m. until about 7:00 p.m. These active fish have been fairly aggressive. Local anglers have started catching fish along the edge of the shallow flats. The best depths are 10-20 feet. This time of the year they will bite on a variety of presentations. Try small jigs tipped with plastic tails, crappie minnows, or larvae. The sunfish have been biting in many of the same areas as the crappies. Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle, Jason, 2 miles south of Nisswa at the Intersection of Hwy 371 and Cty Rd 77, next to Schaefer’s Foods (218-963-2401) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some good reports on crappies and sunnies coming from smaller area lakes. Small crappie minnow and waxworms have been the best but maggots have done well. For sunnies, small jigs are best and for crappies, small feather jigs working well. Sometimes just a plain hook and bobber rig work best. Koep’s Sport Shop, Bill, 3/4 mile south of Nisswa, right on Hwy 371, koeps@arvig.net (218-963-2547) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

Red glow jigs tipped with minnows or Eurolarvae are producing crappies in eight to 20 feet of water. The best sunfish reports are coming out of four to 10 feet of water. Lakes such as Round, Hubert, and the Merrifield end of North Long have all produced sunfish and crappies this week. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

CROSBY AREA Crappies continue to suspend over 10 to 20 feet of water on Mission Lake, Serpent Lake, and Big Mahnomen Lake. Expect bigger fish to be most active during lowlight periods of the day. You’ll have to sort through some small sunfish, but numbers are not a problem on most lakes in 10 to 13 feet of water. Little Mahnomen Lake, Milford Lake, Perry Lake, and June Lake have all given up sunfish this week. Oars ‘n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

Panfish action has improved off the weed edges in six to 16 feet of water. The crappies seem to be relating to the deeper weeds, while the majority of sunfish are more shallow. Lakes such as Round, Hubert, and North Long, are producing fish. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

CROSBY AREA Upper Mission Lake is producing crappies and sunfish just before dark in eight to 10 feet of water. Look to Milford Lake for crappies in 20 to 30 feet of water just before dark each day. On Rabbit Lake, crappies continue to be suspended and active over 22 to 33 feet of water. Several lakes are producing sunfish in shallow water as well. Lakes such as Clinker, Black Hoof, and Little Mahnomen are all safe bets in less than 10 feet of water. Oars ‘n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

Mild temps and good ice conditions have kept anglers out on the ice in the Brainerd Lakes area. The panfish bite continues to move shallower with each passing week. The sunfish and crappies are mixed in together. Good water depths have been in 6-12 feet. The key locations have been weed beds near a drop-off or hole. Small tear drop jigs tipped with crappie minnows or waxworms have been the best bait. Most of the lakes in the area still have 24-30 inches of good ice. This late season action should only improve as we move closer to April. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

NISSWA - Angler’s fishing reports in the Brainerd area have varied this week. Some pretty good crappie action but it has been spotty. It pays to move around and drill holes because the active fish may be only 50 yards away. While there are still fish out in deep basins of the lakes, anglers are starting to see a migration into the shallows. Doing real well this week in 6-15 feet of water. Weed pockets are holding the majority of the fish. The key is to find these pockets. Small jigs and plastic tails or ice jigs tipped with a waxworm has worked. Stick to the smaller lakes for the best action. Anglers are also catching lots of sunfish in many of the same areas. This good fishing should continue through ice-out. Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle, Jason, 2 miles south of Nisswa at the Intersection of Hwy 371 and Cty Rd 77, next to Schaefer’s Foods (218-963-2401) Spring is finally here and for all those panfishermen, panfisherladies and panfisherkids – now is the time to get the reels re-strung, check the rod eyes for cracks, look and clean the tackle boxes and shop for the newest and neatest baits. We are getting enough warm weather to start a spring thaw to get the lakes rejuvenated with oxygen and food to get the panfish in high gear. Ice in the area is still good but be careful of the channels and access points. With the warmer sun, accesses can get to be a little rough but for now they are still okay. Reports have been coming in slowly but we think it is because of the winter blues, not many going out until the thaw and warmer weather. Some areas to try have been the smaller lakes. They seem to be particularly better when the bite is on. Slip bobber rigs are probably the most popular style but a lot has been said about using tubes without bobbers. Also excellent reports of folks using puddle jumpers (works even without live bait). We are ready with the bait and tackle you will need for a great time. It’s too early to rake the yard, so grab the kids and get out and fish!
