The panfish action continues to heat up in the Brainerd Lakes area. With the longer days and milder temperatures, this past week has been great for sitting out on the ice and catching some fish. The crappie bite has moved shallower, with most of the action taking place right off the weed edge in 12 to 18 feet of water. Key locations have been the major points of the larger cabbage beds. Cut a bunch of holes along the break and then “leapfrog” until you make contact with the active fish. A Glow Demon tipped with a crappie minnow has been a good bait choice once the fish have been located. The sunfish action has remained constant. The majority of the sunfish are still located in the weeds, but the larger “Gills have moved out to the edge. Don’t’ be surprised to find a few nice “gills mixed right in with the crappies. So grab a bucket and go enjoy a little Minnesota “spring”.

The colder temperatures at night have kept the ice conditions good in the Brainerd Lakes area. Local anglers continue to drive on most of the area lakes. The easy travel and good fishing have kept many anglers out on the ice. The crappies continue to move shallower. Key locations have been just outside the weeds in 12 to 18 feet of water. These crappies have been suspended anywhere from 4 to 10 feet off the bottom. This action should only improve as we move closer to April.

The recent warm weather has created sloppy ice conditions throughout most of the Brainerd Lakes area. With daytime highs in the fifties, the lake ice has started to honeycomb. Anglers should be advised against driving trucks on most of the lakes. ATV and foot traffic is still possible at the present time. The crappies and sunfish have been biting in 6 to 12 feet of water on many of the area lakes. The key locations have been the pockets in the weed beds. Small crappie minnows, or Euro larva, tipped on a small ice jig is all that is necessary for a great day on the ice.

The ice is gone on many of the smaller lakes in the Brainerd Lakes area. The ice on the bigger lakes is very dark and should be start disappearing in the next week, or so. Any travel on the ice is not advised at this time. Most anglers have turned their attention to the “open water” season and are in the process of getting ready for the spring crappie bite.

Time to start getting the boats out!

The open water season has finally returned to the Brainerd Lakes area. The recent warm weather has really kicked the crappie bite into high gear. The key is to search out the smaller, backwater locations on the lakes. These areas will warm the quickest and this is where you’re sure to find some hungry crappies right now. Small jigs tipped with a minnow, and then suspended below a float, have been the ticket. Good lake choices have been Gull, North Long, and Pelican lakes. It’s time to put that yard rake down and go enjoy some of this beautiful spring weather.

Take Care!
