Crappies and sunfish are biting in three to 10 feet of water off the dock by Bar Harbor on Gull Lake. Small Flu Flus tipped with minnows or worms have worked best. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

Colder than normal temps have really put the hold on the spring crappie bite in the Brainerd Lakes area. Last week’s combination of rain, snow and a little sleet, kept most of the local anglers from thinking about fishing. The few that did venture out on the lakes reported spotty success at best. The bright side to this situation is that the weatherman has forecasted warmer conditions this week. This should bring the crappies back into the shallows. Search for these shallow water crappies in the mud bottomed areas of the backwaters, or small bays. These will be the first locations to warm as the water temps begin to rise again. Once these water temps reach the 50-degree mark, local crappie fishing should explode. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NISSWA The weather has been down right terrible, which hasn’t helped the crappie fishing. We’ve had a few guides out chasing crappies and caught a few fish in the 10- to 13-inch size range. But overall it has been spotty. While some fish are still hanging around in shallow water, many fish have moved back out into 5-10 feet. Some of the better lakes have been Margaret, Upper Gull, North Long and Hubert. Puddle Jumpers are still hot. Good success using pearl white, smoke or blue ice. During this messy weather, many anglers have started using crappie minnows for those crappies that were a little turned off. The sunfish have continued to provide some decent action on waxworms or small leeches. Shore fishermen have caught a mix of sunnies and crappies at the Bar Harbor Docks. With the increase in temps this week, look for the fishing to pick up. CROSSLAKE Opener came in like a lion. Cold, rainy weather kept most anglers dockside Friday night. Few reports of walleyes being caught, but by mid-morning Saturday anglers started to venture out. Whitefish gave up some nice fish on jigs and shiner minnows or leeches in 12-24 feet of water. Pelican, Edwards and Crosslake also produced some walleyes in 16-24 feet. Northern pike action was good with fish reported to be in shallow, with lots of bass hitting. Crappie action continues to be good, fish are being found in shallow water. Try small jigs and minnows next to shore. Holiday of Cross Lake, Lee (218-692-2708) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BRAINERD The cold, wet, windy weather put a damper on the walleye opener in the Brainerd Lakes area. The number of walleyes being caught was few and the size being caught was small. This action should improve with a few more days of warm weather. The bright spot in the fishing action came in the form of crappies. Despite the poor weather conditions, the crappie action in the shallows remained constant. There were many “walleye” fishermen that gave up the chase and switched to crappies instead. The best crappie action occurred in 3-5 feet of water. Shallow, muddy areas continue to out-perform other locations. Small jigs below bobbers continue to be the best baits. If the weather conditions improve, we should start seeing a good bite soon. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NISSWA Opening weekend for walleye fishing greeted the excited anglers with less than ideal conditions. High winds, rain and cold temps made conditions a little tough on the lakes in the Brainerd/Nisswa area. Overall the reports were pretty dismal. The anglers that did find a few walleyes caught them scattered in deeper water. On Gull Lake walleyes were biting on shiners in depths from 20-35 feet. Round Lake produced a few walleyes in 16-24 feet. The night anglers trolling Rapalas had mixed results. Some did very well with some walleyes in the 3-pound range while others caught some smaller fish. The water temps are still very cold, less than 50 degrees. As the water warms the fishing should gradually improve. Aside from the walleyes, the crappie fishing was fairly decent. Anglers experienced great results on Lake Margaret and Lake Hubert. On Margaret the nicer crappies were biting in 5-10 feet of water. On Hubert a recent bug hatch has flies buzzing around the lake. The crappies are feeding on these bugs near the surface. Anglers are catching crappies only a foot down under the bobber. Small crappie minnows or Puddle Jumpers working best. The sunfish are also feeding up in the shallows. Use angle worms or small leeches for nice sized panfish. Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle, Jason, 2 miles south of Nisswa at the Intersection of Hwy 371 and Cty Rd 77, next to Schaefer’s Foods (218-963-2401) NISSWA Fish the shallow weedlines in 6-10 feet for walleyes. Jigging with small 1/8-ounce jigs with a spot-tail shiner the ticket. If fish seem stubborn, try a 1/16-ounce size. Slip bobbering with leeches will work along or in last year’s weedbeds. Don’t forget to try night fishing with lighted bobbers. Pike prowling the shallows following the baitfish so be prepared to try sucker rigs on slip sinkers or even bobber fishing with suckers can be a good test of patience. This can be the best time for panfishing as the water warms. Koep’s Sport Shop, Bill, 3/4 mile south of Nisswa, right on Hwy 371, koeps@arvig.net (218-963-2547) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |

The opener was slow with a few walleyes caught early and late in the day. Spot tail shiners have worked best with fish coming from two depths, seven to 11 feet or 28 to 40 feet of water on Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Round Lake. Crappie action is still very good in the shallows of most lakes and northern pike are biting well in 10 to 12 feet of water. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CROSBY AREA The bar in front of Jones’ Bay on Pelican Lake has been the best bet for walleyes in 16 to 21 feet of water. Look for Rabbit Lake and Serpent Lake to start producing walleyes as soon as the weather warms. Rapalas are fooling rainbow trout and the occasional brown trout in the Portsmouth Pit and Pennington Pit. Hanson’s Bay on Bay Lake is kicking out crappies in six to nine feet of water as is the Deerwood end of Serpent Lake in 12 to 16 feet of water. Oars ‘n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 CROSS LAKE AREA Whitefish Lake is giving up walleyes in 12 to 24 feet of water. A jig tipped with shiner minnows or leeches is producing the best results. Pelican Lake, Lake Edwards, and Crosslake also are producing walleyes in 16 to 24 feet of water. Northern pike and crappie reports can be found in shallow water on area lakes. The walleye bite in the Brainerd Lakes area has been improving with each stable day of weather. The best walleye action occurred on Pelican Lake this last week. Gull was also giving up a few walleyes, but they tended to be on the smaller side. The best locations for walleyes have been the wind blown points. Good depths have been just outside of the weeds. The best baits continue to be spot-tail shiners on a Lindy rig. The crappie action remains strong, but most of the fish are now starting to move out of the shallows. The crappies are just starting to show up in the pencil reeds. One of the better crappie lakes right now is Hubert. The northern pike fishing has been a disappointment so far. The pike action remained slow again this week. The majority of the pike being caught have been in the 2- to 4-pound range. If the weather holds, we should start seeing some real improvement in all types of fishing this next week. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NISSWA The spring season is hitting full stride in the Nisswa area. The walleye fishing is pretty good as is the crappie action. On Gull Lake there has been some very good activity for walleyes in the evenings. Lindy rigs with a plain hook and shiners have produced lots of 13- to 16-inch fish. Some larger fish have been caught out deeper on jigs and shiners. The best locations have been Grassy Point, Dutchman’s Bluff and the south end of the lake. Most fish have been caught in 16-24 feet of water. Anglers have also caught a few fish on Round Lake in the same depths. The pike fishing has been great on the Gull Chain. Sucker minnows have produced pike up to 10 pounds in the last week. The crappie fishing has really turned on as the fish are starting to go up on the spawning beds. Big Black crappies are hitting crappie minnows or Puddle Jumpers on many of the smaller lakes in the area. As the water warms up this week look for the sunfish to join them. Use small leeches for the bigger sunnies. The next ten days will be some of the best fishing we will experience all season. Be sure to get out and enjoy it. Dave’s Sportland Bait & Tackle, Jason, 2 miles south of Nisswa at the Intersection of Hwy 371 and Cty Rd 77, next to Schaefer’s Foods (218-963-2401) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NISSWA On Monday, clear blue skies, little wind, and the fishing was great! Where was the nice weather this past weekend? Despite the unruly weather on Saturday and Sunday, walleye were actually being caught. Unfortunately there is no real pattern. Fish are still scattered in 15-25 feet during the day and 5-15 feet in the evening. There were some nice reports of walleyes being caught when trolling Rapalas along the weedlines in 6 feet in the later evenings. Daytime walleyes were being caught with Lindy’s using redtail or spottail shiners. Best lakes were Pelican, Whitefish and Gull produced bigger fish lately. Some nice northerns were also caught and released. Some with sucker minnows on live bait rigs but some were also by accident while fishing for crappies in the shallows. Panfish reports were mixed, mainly because of the weather. Saturday had some nice fish coming out of 3-5 feet in the Bar Harbor channels areas between the lakes, and also the other channels on the Chain of Lakes. Good reports from some of the smaller lakes in the area that were not adversely affected by the wind. Sunnies were on a roll in the 1- to 3-foot range. Now the bass season is upon us this weekend and for some there isn’t much more fun than tying onto a nice largemouth and playing tug-of-war to see who is the master angler! So with the holiday here, it is time to get out and wet a line! Koep’s Sport Shop, Bill, 3/4 mile south of Nisswa, right on Hwy 371, koeps@arvig.net (218-963-2547) Courtesy of Outdoors Weekly |
