The bass action has taken center stage in the Brainerd Lakes area. The recent hot weather has pushed the bass onto the second breakline and the hot water has kicked the bass bite into high gear. The northern action has been steady as well. The best baits have been spin rigs tipped with a sucker minnow. The sunfish action remained steady as well. The larger sunfish are relating to the second weedline. Good depths for bluegills has been in 12-15 feet of water. The walleye action was slower this last week.

CROSSLAKE
Whitefish and Crosslake producing walleyes in 18-24 feet on leeches and crawlers. Anglers are having good luck at dusk while trolling, longlining on Whitefish over 40-60 feet of water. Bass active in the weeds hitting surface lures and weedless worm rigs. Crappies and panfish found along the 12-foot weedline. Minnows or waxworms on small jigs working best. Pike hitting spinner rigs and large pike minnows at the weedlines and drop-offs.

NISSWA
Reported by fishing master employee, Matt Holbrook: Bass on most area lakes has been hot. Best lakes have been Whitefish, Gull and North Long. Look in the 8- to 14-foot range along weedlines or flats with weeds. Day bite has been best using jigworms and Texas rigged plastics. Evening bite has done well using buzzbaits and topwater plugs. Walleyes have been okay with Gull having the quantity but smaller in size. North Long, Pelican and Whitefish have had bigger fish being caught. Day bite has been along weed edges and hard bottoms. Look in 10-16 feet in the weeds or 16-35 feet on the hard bottom. Lindy rigging with leeches or redtails or even goldies have produced. Other favorites have been slip bobbering with leeches or trolling crankbaits during the evening hours. Northern pike have been chasing crankbaits and large spinners in the weeds or weed edges in 8-16 feet deep. Also doing well was slip bobbering with sucker minnows. Sunfish have been going crazy anywhere and anytime. Most are using waxies, panfish leeches or angler worms. Crappies are still being caught in 8-14 feet of water along weed edges or in weed flats. The Cullen Lakes, Round Lake and Whitefish have been the best.

Walleyes are hitting leeches, nightcrawlers, and redtails in 12 to 22 feet of water. Look for more numbers on Gull Lake, but Pelican Lake and North Long Lake are producing bigger fish. Largemouth bass and panfish have moved from the shallows and are setting up along the 10- to 12-foot weed edges on most lakes.

The bass bite continues to receive most of the attention in the Brainerd Lakes area. The key location has been the second weedline in 13-17 feet of water. Jig/worm and drop-shot rigs have been accounting for most of the bass. The northern action remained strong. Larger pike continue to show up outside the weedline as the water temperatures rise. The best action occurred on Edwards Lake in 17-20 feet of water. Sucker minnows on spin-rigs, or white spinnerbaits, accounted for most of the action. The sunfish bite remains strong. The key location for the larger bluegills has been the sunken islands that top off in 14 to 18 feet of water. The walleye bite continues to be slow. But the there were several days in the middle of the week, when the skies were overcast, that produced a fair bite on Gull Lake.

NISSWA
It was a busy weekend in the Nisswa area, lots of happy anglers hitting area lakes. The fish were in a biting mood as well. The bass and northern pike are really snapping on most of the lakes. Some lakes that are especially good this week are Hubert, Edwards and North Long. Bass are hitting plastic worms fished slowly along the weedlines in 8-12 feet of water. The pike are smashing spinners and minnows that are being trolled just a bit deeper, 13-18 feet. One of our fishing guides had a customer land a beautiful 15-pound northern over the weekend. The pike fishing should only get better with the continued hot weather. The walleye fishing has had its ups and downs. Caught a few fish along the weedlines when the wind has blown. The key has been the wind. Most of the walleyes have been tucked up in the weeds. Just work a Lindy rig and redtail chub slowly along the weed edge. The best lakes for walleyes are Pelican and Gull Lake. Sunfish and crappies continue to bite in 8-12 feet. Sunfish are biting on worms in the day and crappies are hitting minnows in the evening.

With this past weekend of consistent weather, the fishing is going wild. Bass have been caught on most area lakes. Spinnerbaits in yellow and white have been working well. Black or tequila worms have equalled spinnerbaits when used with a 1/8-ounce black mushroom-head jig. Casting in the offshore weedbeds has been great. Northern have provided anglers with tons of action. Blade baits of any style has worked. The bigger the blade, the better – creating the thumping that drives them nuts. Best colors have been yellow, red or hammered silver. If you like to run deeper plugs, try the deep #12 husky jerks, in tiger or yellow 10-12 feet deep. Walleye action slowed, but had a report of a 31-incher caught and released on Whitefish. You need to be either in the weeds using a weed weasel, jig/minnow combo or running deep in the 20- to 30-foot reefs. Panfish have given the youngsters sore arms with all the action. Bobber fishing seems to have reached an all time high with all the panfish bait being sold. Decent crappie action on Pelican, North Long and small lakes around the Whitefish area. Mimic minnow spins in 12-15 feet have also worked well. Or try bobber set-ups with hair jigs and minnows. You will have to do some sorting if you’re fishing for sunnies. Waxworms, angle worms and panfish leeches all working well. Rig them with a small single hook and small float for the most action. To find bigger fish, look to the deeper 8- to 10-foot weedline.

CROSSLAKE
Whitefish and Crosslake producing a few walleyes in 18-24 feet on leeches and crawlers. Bass hitting surface lures and weedless worm rigs. Crappies and panfish found along the 12-foot weedline taking minnows or waxworms on small jigs.

The bass action continues to dominate the fishing scene in the Brainerd Lakes area. The stable, hot, humid conditions have really caused the bass to put on the feed bag. The northern action has also kicked it up a notch. There were several large northern pike taken this week on Whitefish Lake and Gull. The walleye action remains slow. So put the Lindy rigs away, and go bend some rods with the bass and northern action.

CROSSLAKE
Walleye anglers are finding fish along the weedline in 18-20 feet. Try Lindy rigs and leeches or nightcrawlers on spinners or floating snells (6- to 8-foot long). Northern action continues to be found in the weeds or next to the weeds. Minnows on spinner rigs worked along the edge should provide plenty of action. Bass are in the weeds, try surface lures or weedless worm rigs worked deep. Crappie and panfish are being found suspended over 24-28 feet, 14 feet down. Try a small jig tipped with a minnow or crawler.

NISSWA
The fishing continues to be very good in the Nisswa area. This week anglers caught lots of bass, northern pike and panfish. The tough bite keeps on for the walleyes so for now we will concentrate on the other species. The bass have been hitting very good on most area lakes. Anglers are finding good success pitching jigworm combos along the weedlines. The best depths are 12-16 feet. The northerns have been active in many of the same areas. Jigs and minnows or spinners and minnows are really producing some dandy northerns. A good crappie bite has developed the last 10 days in the evenings. Good results have been had for anglers slow trolling with Northland Thumper Jigs in 12-14 feet.

The cooler weather is here and you can actually get out in comfort! With last week’s heat, the fishermen took the beating from the sun, but the bass took a beating from the fishermen. Bassin’ is still hot anywhere from 2 feet under lilypads out to 18 feet. Plastics working well, try 7-inch worms with mushroom jigheads. Darker colors seem best. Spinnerbaits work also, use buzz baits or topwater plugs when weather is calm. Northern pike fishing mixed. Some great reports, but only a few with bigger fish. Big-bladed inline Mepps spinners working great. Sucker minnow with a bobber set-up cast into the weeds in deeper water gives anglers a good fight and test in patience. When that bobber goes down, wait for a short time, then set the hook. A lot of fish have been missed when hook-set was too soon! Walleye reports are also mixed. Some nice fishing caught this past week in deeper water (25-40 feet) during morning hours. Move shallow in the evenings, about 15-20 feet. Night bobber fishing has been excellent if you can handle the bugs with a good repellent. Try a Lindy lighted bobber with a tail-hooked minnow or leech.
