Good action for the “gators” has been on both Gull Lake and the Whitefish Chain. Spin rigs with a sucker minnow, or just big creekers on a Lindy rig have been accounting for most of the action. The bass action is still going strong throughout the area. The majority of these bass are still being found just off the second break line. But don’t be afraid to go right up into slop for a few big fish. The sunfish are still being caught in 18-20 feet of water. The only action that’s been slow has been the walleye. The only bite that’s been occurring for the walleyes has been taking place well after dark while pulling shallow running crankbaits over the weeds.

The bite continues to be good. Anglers have been very busy catching bass, pike and panfish. Concentrate on the weed edge from 10-18 feet. Plastic worms have worked real well for the bass. Sucker minnows are producing some nice pike on Upper Gull and Roy Lake. Panfish are biting everywhere, worms have been the ticket. The crappie bite has been consistent in the evening hours on Lake Hubert.

BRAINERD
It’s muskie time in the Brainerd Lakes area. The warmer temps have kicked the muskies and larger pike into gear. There were several good fish released this last week. Trolling bucktails, or large swimbaits, have been the best method for producing fish. The bass are still very active and can be found just off the second weed line on most of the lakes throughout the area. Jig/worm combos are still producing many fish. But with this hot water, don’t be afraid to cast a crankbait. The crankbait will allow you to cover more water, and with the hot water, the bass are willing to chase. The nicer bluegills are still being caught off the sunken islands on most of the lakes.

CROSSLAKE
Walleye are down deep in 30+feet of water. Try Lindy rigs with redtails or leeches. Also try trolling Rapalas or big crankbaits over deeper water. Bass and northern pike action is taking place in the weeds and along the outer weed edge. Use spinner rigs tipped with sucker minnows for the northerns and plastic worm rigs for the bass. Crappie and panfish are being found suspended over 20-28 feet about 12-16 feet down. Look for shady areas. Small jig and minnow set-ups jigged through these deep water areas should provide plenty of action.

The fishing has been great this week. Even saw a little walleye action, not a lot, but they were walleyes. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come. The walleyes are biting on redtails or leeches in 28-34 feet of water. They have been scattered so you’ll need to do a little searching to find them. The bass have been quite easy to pinpoint. Most weedlines have lots of bass on them. Plastic worms or any kind of live bait has produced some quality bass. Key on nice looking weedbeds for good action in 10-16 feet. The big pike are really becoming active on the deep weed edges. Anglers have boated fish up to 15 pounds this week on spinnerbaits or crankbaits. Sucker minnows are also producing some nice catches. The sunfish and crappies are biting pretty good. Try using small worms or plastic tails for some good action. This time of the year most area lakes are really going, so just pick one and go.

This week anglers finally started catching some nice walleyes on Gull and North Long lakes in 18-22 feet running live bait rigs tipped with redtails, creek chubs or leatherbacks. Large leeches will work also. Evening bite towards sunset anglers have been running shad raps in 12-15 feet of water along the weed edges. Bass continue to be strong. Pitching plastics around docks and shore have been a late surprise. Or try pitching a weedless jig/minnow rig in 12 feet of water. On calm days or late evenings use surface baits such as plastic frogs over the lily pads. Crappies are suspended about 6-8 feet in 12-15 feet of water. Slip bobber set-ups have been producing but using small jigs/plastics also working. White, yellow and smoke are the hot colors. Some cool weather is on the way and will make it fun for all to get out and enjoy. Call us or stop by for up-to-date info.

There have been some nice largemouth bass taken off the 12- to 19-foot weed edges with plastics. Live bait rigs tipped with redtail minnows and leeches have produced walleyes along the 16- to 24-foot weeds. The majority of sunfish and crappies caught are coming from six to 12 feet of water. Lakes such as Round, Gull, North Long, and Nisswa have been favorites among anglers this week for all species.

There's been some improved walleye action during the evening hours on North Long Lake, Gull Lake, and Whitefish Lake. Redtail minnows have been the hot bait in 17 to 22 feet of water. Bass are hitting spinnerbaits on all lakes, while the south end of Gull is a safe bet for northern pike in eight to 15 feet of water. Most of the smaller lakes in this area are producing sunfish in 10 to 12 feet of water.

BRAINERD
The walleye fishing has finally kicked into gear in the Brainerd Lakes area. There was a good walleye bite on Whitefish, Gull and North Long lakes this past week. The majority of walleyes are being caught right on the weedline in 14-18 feet of water. A Lindy rig tipped with a creek chub, or redtail, has been the ticket for putting some ’eyes into the boat. The bass fishing remained strong this week as well. Don’t be surprised to find some nice bass mixed in with the walleyes. The majority of the larger bass are still located on the second break. The muskie action continues to bend some poles as well. The muskie action should just keep getting better as we move closer to fall.

Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965)

CROSSLAKE
Walleye action slowed a bit due to the stormy weather. Anglers that did venture out report finding fish in 30-34 feet. Try leeches and Lindy rigs or spinner rigs worked along this deep range. Some trolling taking place over deeper water, but limited success reported. Bass and northern action continues to take place in and along the outer weedline. Large pike minnows on spinner rigs or bobber fished providing anglers with plenty of action. Bass anglers are working jigs and worms through the weeds or throwing spinnerbaits. Crappies are suspended in 12-14 feet of water off submerged islands or points, look for the shady side. Try minnows or waxworms on small jigs.

Walleyes, walleyes, walleyes! We are seeing some tremendous late summer action out on Gull Lake. The mid lake bars and humps are producing lots of keeper size fish. Best luck has been had by working a Lindy rig and a redtail chub slowly along the breaklines. Depths of 18-26 feet produced the best results. The future looks good for Gull this coming fall and next season. We are starting to see lots of healthy walleyes measuring in at 15-16 inches. It took a couple of years but it’s getting better, at least for now. The bass are still biting everywhere. Plastic worms or minnows on a jighead have caught lots of scrappy largemouth lately. The bass are hanging out on the weedlines in 16-18 feet. The pike continue to hit baits trolled in 10-14 feet. Try anything with flash and remember to use a steal leader. Big sunnies are biting on worms in 15-18 feet.

BRAINERD/NISSWA
The cooler weather has improved walleye activity on Gull Lake. A redtail minnow and Lindy Rig has worked best in 17 to 26 feet of water. Work similar depths and presentations on North Long Lake and Whitefish Lake for walleyes as well. Bass fishing still is going strong with spinnerbaits along the six- to 12-foot weed edges. Northern pike are hitting along the 12- to 18-foot weedlines on most lakes, but North Long has kicked out bigger fish.

CROSS LAKE AREA

Spinner rigs and live bait rigs tipped with leeches are producing walleyes in 30 to 34 feet of water. Bass and northern pike are roaming the outside weed edges and hitting spinnerbaits or sucker minnows. Crappies are being found suspended in 12 to 14 feet of water off the submerged islands and points.
