The walleye fishing continues to improve in the Brainerd Lakes area. There was a good bite to be found on North Long, Pelican and Gull Lake this last week. The majority of the fish are starting to drop off the weedlines. Lindy rigs tipped with redtail chubs have been accounting for most of the fish. Key depths have been 18-28 feet of water, during the day, and 10-12 feet at night. The bass fishing continues to be strong. A big white spinnerbait, slow rolled across the flats, is a great method to bend the rod. Muskie fishing has been strong on Mille Lacs with reports of several nice fish released this last week. With the nights getting cooler, this action should only improve as we move farther into fall. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) CROSSLAKE The dog days of August have struck the Crosslake area. Walleyes remain deep, down in 30-34 feet. Lindy rigs or spinner rigs tipped with redtails or leeches working during the day, and trolling crankbaits over deep water working during the evening hours. Northern pike and bass continue to be found along the outer weed edge. Try spinner rigs with large sucker minnows or bobber fished. Bass are in and along the outer weed edge. Try spinnerbaits or jig and plastic worms worked along the surface or in the weeds. Crappie are suspended down 12-14 feet off points and submerged islands. Small jigs tipped with minnows or worms should work well. Panfish are biting along the weedlines also. Holiday of Cross Lake, Lee (218-692-2708) NISSWA Reports of 10, 20, 30 walleye days have been common this past week. The walleye bite has hit full stride. Perfect timing as we head into the Labor Day weekend. After a couple of years of waiting for the young year classes to grow up, we are starting to see keepers. We are now catching lots of fish between 14-18 inches. A combination of tremendous weather and active walleyes has made for a spectacular month. It has been mostly been a minnow bite, redtail chubs to be specific. Nightcrawlers would be the next best bait. Smaller redtails were out producing the larger ones in the last few days. These walleyes are on a feeding frenzy. We’ve been tailhooking minnows on a Lindy rig with a short leader, 2-4 feet. Most walleyes have been located on the windward side of the lake. Any windswept weedline, hump, point, or inside turn is holding fish. The best depths have been from the weed edges in 13-16 feet all the way out to 30 feet. The fishing has been great all day long. During the day the fish may move up and down the break. So be mobile. If you are planning to get out this weekend for walleyes, don’t forget to hit Gull Lake. It has been red hot. Walleye fishing continues to improve in 16 to 28 feet of water with redtail minnows. Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Whitefish Lake all have provided better action this week than last. The area bass bite remains strong in the weeds with spinnerbaits. Sucker minnows also will produce northern pike along the weed edge,s and panfish can be had with small leeches along the 10- to 12-foot weedlines on most lakes. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 CROSS LAKE Lindy Rigs and spinner rigs tipped with redtails or leeches have produced walleyes in 30 to 34 feet of water during the day. A few also have been caught with deep-running crankbaits during the evening hours. Northern pike, sunfish, and bass continue to be found along the outer weed edges of most lakes. Look for crappies to be suspended about 12 feet down off the points and submerged islands. Crosslake Holiday Sports (218) 692-2708 Courtesy of Outdoor News |

Good walleye bite on North Long, Pelican and Gull Lake. Starting to drop off the weedlines. Lindy rigs tipped with redtail chubs have been accounting for most of the fish. Work 18-28 feet of water during the day and 10-12 feet at night. Bass fishing best with big white spinnerbaits. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) CROSSLAKE Crosslake walleyes remain deep, down in 30-34 feet. Lindy rigs or spinner rigs tipped with redtails or leeches working during the day, and trolling crankbaits over deep water working during the evening hours. Northern pike and bass found along the outer weed edge hitting spinner rigs and large sucker minnows. Bass in the outer weed edge taking spinnerbaits or jig and plastic worms worked. Crappies suspended 12-14 feet off points and islands. Small jigs/minnows or worms should work well. Holiday of Cross Lake, Lee (218-692-2708) NISSWA What a great weekend, despite some blustery conditions. The walleye fishing continues to be phenomenal. Lindy rigs and redtails or jigs and fatheads are producing some very nice results. Fish are scattered but active on lots of different spots. Points and humps are both holding some nice walleyes. Good depths to try range from 14-28 feet, it seems to be different from spot to spot. Gull Lake has received the most attention but we are hearing some very good reports from Pelican and the Whitefish Chain. Bass and northerns continue to feed up for winter on most smaller lakes in the Nisswa area. What a tremendous way to kick off the fall season. BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA Lindy Rigs tipped with redtail minnows continue to produce walleyes during the day in 16 to 28 feet of water. Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Whitefish Lake have been most productive, but most lakes have produced more walleyes than a week ago. Spinnerbaits are fooling largemouth bass in 12 to 16 feet on most lakes and you will find crappies suspended over 14 feet of water on many lakes. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 CROSBY AREA There's a night walleye bite on Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake in 18 to 24 feet of water. Lindy Rigs and minnows are working best after dark. Look to Clearwater Lake for crappies in eight to 20 feet of water. Sunfish can be found along the deep weed edges of most lakes. Lakes such as Rabbit, Serpent, Mission, and Horseshoe are safe bets for largemouth bass and northern pike. Rainbow trout activity has picked up at the Pennington Pit and Portsmouth Pit. The majority of fish are suspended between 30 and 50 feet below the surface. Opening weekend goose reports were very good and limits were common. BRAINERD The walleye bite remains strong in the Brainerd Lakes area. Many of the local lakes are experiencing a great walleye bite at the present time. The best lakes in the area have been Whitefish, North Long and Gull. There are still a good deal of scattered schools of fish on the weedline, but the majority of the ’eyes have dropped deeper. The best depths have been in 24-35 feet of water. The best method for catching these fish has been with a Lindy rig tipped with a redtail, but don’t be afraid to do a little jigging also. The night trollers are catching fish after dark in 6-11 feet of water. Long lining Rapalas have been the ticket for these fish. Forget about the yardwork. There’s still time plenty of time for that later. Head to the water, because the walleye bite is on. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) CROSSLAKE Crosslake walleyes are in 30-34 feet taking Lindy rigs or spinner rigs tipped with redtails or leeches. Try trolling crankbaits over deep water during the evening hours. Northern pike and bass are along the weed edge. Crappies still suspended 12-14 feet off points and islands hitting small jigs/minnows. Holiday of Cross Lake, Lee (218-692-2708) NISSWA Walleye fishing continues to go gangbusters. Limits have been fairly common on Gull Lake and Pelican Lake. Gull Lake hosted the Minnesota Walleye Trail championship over the weekend, many competitors reported catching 50-100 fish per day. They said the fishing is “unbelievable” right now. A dandy 27-incher was caught and released by one of Dave’s Sportlands’ lucky customers on Sunday morning. Most fish are biting on redtail chubs but a few bigger fish have bit on nightcrawlers. Anglers have found fish scattered from 13 feet all the way out to 40 feet. The bass and pike have also been cooperative lately. They are feeding up along the weedlines in 12-16 feet. The time to go is now, so don’t hesitate! BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA Gull Lake has been kicking out a lot of walleyes in 15 to 32 feet of water. Chubs, redtails, and nightcrawlers have worked best. Look for North Long Lake and Pelican Lake for walleyes at similar depths. Large sucker minnows are turning northern pike in 12 to 23 feet of water on area lakes. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 CROSBY AREA Crappie action continues to be good in 10 to 15 feet of water on Perry Lake, Lake Adney, and Clearwater Lake. Minnows are taking walleyes in Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake in 15 to 18 feet of water. Northern pike are cruising weed edges and inhaling minnows on lakes such as Mission, Horseshoe, and Rabbit. Look for suspended rainbow trout about 30 to 50 feet down on the Pennington Pit and Portsmouth Pit. If the water continues to cool, look for brown trout to start getting active as well. BRAINERD The walleye bite was nothing short of fantastic this last week in the Brainerd Lakes area. Gull, Pelican, North Long and Hubert were all kicking out walleyes this last week. The best bite has been either very shallow, or deep. The shallow bite has been right on the weed line in 10-12 feet of water. Most of these fish have been on the larger side. Pay attention to the wind blown areas. These have been the best shallow locations. The deep bite has been in 45-47 feet of water. The walleyes have been more numerous in these locations, but the size is not as good as the shallow fish. A jig tipped with a shiner minnow, or a “creaky” on a lindy rig have both been good baits. The bass fishing has been good and there’s been several good reports from the muskie fishermen on the river just south of town. Holiday of Cross Lake, Lee (218-692-2708) NISSWA Walleye fishing has shown no signs of slowing, as limits of fish have been common on Gull Lake and Pelican Lake. Active fish have been scattered at various depths on Gull. Best results have been had on a Lindy rig and redtail chub worked slowly in 13-28 feet. On Pelican the walleyes seem to be congregated along the deep weedlines from 26-32 feet. Redtails are the ticket on Pelican as well. Another option that has produced some nice results is a fireball jig tipped with a lively fathead minnow. With stable weather this bite should continue in the weeks to come. BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA Walleye fishing keeps getting better and better. Lakes such as North Long, Pelican, Gull, and Round all have produced fish in 16 to 32 feet of water. Lindy Rigs or jigs tipped with redtails, chubs, leeches, or nightcrawlers all have worked. The area's biggest northern pike and crappies are coming from 12 to 18 feet of water on these same lakes. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 CROSBY AREA Crankbaits or a jig and minnow combination has produced a lot of walleyes on the Mississippi River in eight feet of water. Serpent Lake also is worth noting for walleyes and some northern pike in 16 to 20 feet of water. Crappies are being caught in 12 feet of water on Perry Lake, Blind Lake, Lake Adney, and Bay Lake. Rainbow trout continue to be pulled from the Pennington Pit and Portsmouth Pit about 30 to 50 feet below the surface. Sunfish reports have been improving on Mission Lake and Horseshoe Lake, but the majority of fish being caught continue to be small. Oars 'n Mine Bait and Tackle (218) 546-6912 Outdoor News |

BRAINERD AREA There's "just a good all around walleye bite" taking place on many lakes. Jigs or Lindy Rigs tipped with minnows, crawlers, and leeches have produced a lot of walleyes in 16 to 30 feet of water. Look to lakes such as Gull, North Long, Pelican, and Whitefish to give up the most fish. S & W Bait & Tackle (218) 829-7010 CROSBY AREA A jig tipped with a redtail minnow or shiner minnow is providing steady walleye action in 20 to 28 feet of water on Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake. Crankbaits continue to produce walleyes and northern pike on the Mississippi River. You'll also hook plenty of northern pike with spinnerbaits on the shallow weed edges of Upper Mission Lake and Mitchell Lake. Look for suspended crappies over 20 feet of water on lakes such as Black Hoof and Clinker, while the Portsmouth Pit continues to produce rainbow trout and northern pike.
