The walleye bite is still on in the Brainerd Lakes area. Gull, Whitefish and Pelican lakes are all putting out their share of fish. Most of the fish are still being caught deep during the day and then shallow at night. The shore fishermen have caught a few nice fish in the past week fishing after dark near current areas. Even with the good fishing, the number of boats on the water has dropped, as the local fishermen have shifted their sights to deer. There’s plenty of deer in the area and if the moderate weather holds, we should be in for another record deer harvest.

BRAINERD/NISSWA

Walleye fishing remains good on most lakes with North Long, Pelican, and Gull providing the best action in 16 to 46 feet of water. A jig or Lindy Rig tipped with shiner minnows or rainbow minnows has worked best. Several walleyes between 26 and 30 inches were reported off Gull this week.

CROSBY AREA

Panfish and bass anglers have been minimal. Walleyes continue to be caught, although angler participation has dropped off. Minnows have been providing steady walleye action in 14 to 20 feet of water on lakes such as Rabbit, Serpent, Horseshoe, and Clearwater. There are a few more ducks in the area, deer hunters anticipate a good season, and grouse hunting has been very good.

The warmer than normal weather slowed the results for the first weekend of deer season in the Brainerd Lakes area. Although several nice bucks were harvested in the area, hunters reported seeing less deer activity than last year. If the weatherman’s forecast holds, we might be in for some colder weather by this next weekend. The fishing has been stable, although there are few fishermen on the lake. It seems that all the fishermen are either deer hunting, or they’ve put their boats away for the winter.

The combination of heavy rains and strong winds really put a damper on the second weekend of deer hunting in the Brainerd Lakes area. The deer harvest was definitely down this year. Most hunters reported seeing less deer than previous years. It seems that the bucks are just starting to chase the does. This week’s snow should help the hunters that still have one weekend left in zone one. There are still some shore anglers catching walleyes on Gull at night, but the number of boats on the area lakes has dropped dramatically. Now’s a good time to start getting the ice fishing gear ready.

Last week’s colder weather caused many of the smaller lakes in the Brainerd Lakes area to freeze over. The majority of the local fishermen have long since put their boats away and they are now waiting for the first safe ice. If the current weather patterns hold, we should see some improvement in the ice conditions for the smaller area lakes within the next two weeks.
