The majority of the local fishermen have long since put their boats away and they are now waiting for the first safe ice. If the current weather patterns hold, we should see some improvement in the ice conditions for the smaller area lakes within the next week. Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) |

The winter ice season is upon us in the Brainerd Lakes area. This week’s below zero temperature put a good coat of ice on many of the smaller lakes in the area. Ice fishing on the bigger lakes is still not advisable at this time. So, grab your crappie gear and head out to the lake. It won’t be long and we’ll be able to put a few holes in the big lakes as well.

CROSSLAKE Ice conditions in the Crosslake area improved with the cold weather. Most lakes are ice-covered with the exception of Trout and Whitefish. Many smaller area lakes have 4 or more inches of ice as of Monday. Bigger lakes that froze over at the end of last week now have 2-3 inches. Please check conditions before you venture out. Ice fishermen report success angling for northern pike along shoreline breaks. Crappie anglers are finding fish in 12-16 feet of water with minnows or waxworms. Walleye anglers might have to wait another couple days for more ice to get to their favorite spots.

NISSWA It was a busy weekend in the Nisswa area. Lots of anglers getting out for the first time this ice season. The ice conditions are good and continue to improve every day. By this weekend we should be able to walk out just about everywhere and four-wheeler/snowmobile travel is likely. Most smaller lakes presently have 4-6 inches of good solid ice, and with this cold snap it is growing. Gull was steaming a little Monday morning in areas with cracked ice, but should be fishable by the end of the week. The walleye activity started decent with a few fish being caught in the mornings and evenings on Round Lake. Anglers found the walleyes holding on the first break in 18-24 feet. Jigging spoons tipped with fatheads or rainbows caught fish and a set line with a lively golden shiner produced a few nice fish as well. The panfishing was good with anglers catching a few smaller fish on wax worms or crappies minnows. Small lakes were best for the panfishermen. Please use caution as you head out on the lakes there are still some areas with open cracks, so please check as you go.

Most lakes are walkable this weekend - As always - be safe! Some Walleye's are hitting the ice - try smaller blade baits with fat head minnows. 9-14 feet of water seems to be the spot. I have had my best luck along weed lines. Northern action is HOT!!! Most are being taken at 8-12 foot on tip ups! Pan fish - I talked with a few folks that were getting some nice sunfish - they were using wax worms in 7-12 feet in weedy area's. Good Luck and be safe! A little tip - I carry a cordless drill with a long drill bit - drill a hole every few yards to check ice depth! Randy Man |

Most small lakes offer six to eight inches of ice, while Gull Lake was the last to freeze and has less ice. Walleyes are being caught on lakes such as North Long, Edwards, and Pelican on shiners or rainbow minnows. Rosy reds, Eurolarvae, or waxworms are turning crappies on Lake Margaret, North Long, and Pelican.

CROSBY AREA
You'll find up to seven inches of ice on the small lakes and about four inches on the big lakes. Rabbit Lake and Serpent Lake are giving up walleyes during the evening hours in 18 to 22 feet of water. Setlines and shiner minnows have worked best. Crappie and northern pike action has been consistent on lakes such as Little Blackhoof, Mahnomen, and Hay.

Ice conditions continue to improve with the cold weather. Most lakes are ice-covered with the exception of Trout and Whitefish. Three to five inches of ice is common on the area's smaller lakes. Angling for northern pike has gone well along the shoreline breaks of most lakes. Crappie anglers have been successful with minnows or waxworms in 12 to 16 feet of water. Walleye anglers likely will have to wait a few more days to reach their favorite early ice locations.

Cold temperatures have created good ice in the Brainerd Lakes area. People are starting to drive trucks on some of the smaller lakes in the area. Gull, Pelican and North Long lakes have all been giving up a few walleyes in the evenings, but the action has been hit or miss. Most of the 'eyes have been coming off the first break in 18-22 feet of water. The pike action has been good on many of the smaller lakes. The panfish action has been good in the mornings on several of the smaller lakes in the area.

CROSSLAKE All lakes are ice covered in the Crosslake area with Trout Lake being the only one with 2-4 inches. Most lakes have 8+inches and anglers are going out on them with ATVs and snowmobiles. Pelican and Crosslake are giving up walleyes in the 18- to 24-foot areas on jigging spoons tipped with shiner or rainbow minnows. Northern pike action continues to be good, try tip-ups and sucker minnows located off points and channel areas. Crappie and panfish are being caught in 14-16 feet of water with small glow jigs and waxworms or minnows.

NISSWA The walleyes have been hit or miss this week, but overall the activity has been above average. Anglers have had good luck on Gull, Round and Pelican Lake. Jigging spoons tipped with fatheads are catching walleyes in 17-30 feet of water. The ice conditions continue to improve as people are starting to drive out on some of the lakes. The pike action has been good on the smaller lakes for anglers using sucker minnows on tip-ups. Ten to 16 feet of water has been best for pike. Crappies are starting to be caught in the evening hours. Small glow jigs tipped with eurolarvae or crappie minnows are working on the crappies.

NISSWA With the second cold blast of winter the ice conditions are improving. We are seeing a good 6-12 inches on most area lakes. Caution is still advised when traveling on the ice. Did see some vehicles on the ice this past Sunday but it is not recommended. Although, the ice is good ice and the snow that came last week didn’t add a lot of slush – some areas had no slush at all. As far as fishing goes, doing well for walleyes, with Gull, Pelican and Round being the hot spots. Two depth ranges producing, from 18-21 feet and from 26-30 feet. No one lure is doing the best - even simple hook and split shot rigs with slip bobbers have done as well as jigging spoons. Glow type jigs seem to still have the upper hand as far as attractants but the metallic gold and silver/gold have done equally as well. We did receive some nice crappie reports from the smaller lakes. It seems that setting the hooks at 8-10 feet off bottom in 25 feet deep seems to have done very well. Good area lakes for panfish have been Nisswa lake, Margaret, Pine Lake up in Crosslake area and Lower Cullen but most smaller lakes have good panfish action but you will have to weed thru to get decent eater sizes.
