March bite stays strong...

Hello sportsfans... Welcome to the weekly lure.

T'was a huge week for walleyes and saugers here at the camp. Certainly one of the best bites we've had going this winter season.

What's the key? Location...

Plain and simple we've been able to locate some active schools on the westerly portion, Big Traverse, south shore. It's been good.

Working 33 to 35 feet of water. Seeing a mix of walleyes and saugers. Best bite times the past few days have been from about 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Not a big rush to get out early in the day, or to stay late into the afternoon. Perfect!

Most fish are holding near the bottom. Four to eight inches has been the norm. Typically bright colors, and start low, jigging / jigging / jigging, and work your way up.

At time those fish will hold near the bottom. They're there... You just have to figure out a way to coax 'em up.

Sometimes slowly lifting to about a foot off the bottom, and then just twitching, will do the trick. Basically, just keep mixing it up. And try to figure our what's working best.

Otherwise... That's pretty much a wrap for this week. Overall, we've had some SUPER fishing the past seven days.

Remember... The ice fishing season draws to a close on April 1st.

(WE HAVE OPENINGS AVAILABLE BOTH MID-WEEK AND WEEKEND)

Our guides will have houses on the lake until then...

Winter conditions remain IDEAL. Plenty of snow, ice, and FISH. There's more fishing to be had...

Need an idea for a getaway? A chance to get out of town with the friends or family? How 'bout Easter Weekend... That would be the weekend of the 26th.

Fishing... Fishing... Fishing... Fishing...

'Eyes are smiling...

Hello sportsfans...

Wow. Here we are. Right smack in the middle of March. Where has the ice fishing season gone?

Thankfully, the first two weeks of this month have really been a blessing. Good fishing, followed with tremendous winter weather, only to be enhanced with great support from our fishing friends. All considered, this (so far) has been the most momentous month of the winter fishing season. Thanks!

With two weeks to go, before the shacks must be removed from the lake, we are sitting quite nicely on the shores of our new found western haunts. The walleye / sauger action remains steady. Working 30 to 35 foot depths, just off the breaks, and lots of action to be had.

Ice conditions remain excellent. And with no signs of a spring thaw in our very near future, we will, without doubt, be fishing right up to the first of April. Great news for those that love late season fishing...

There are a couple more busy weeks ahead, and hopefully the fish continue to cooperate. Maybe even with time to throw some trophy size walleyes into the mix. That can be expected during late season. We'll see...

In the meantime, we're looking forward to seeing everyone these next couple of weeks. And if you haven't made plans, and there's time to spare, give us a holler.

The more the merrier here on Lake of the Woods!

There’s a steady walleye bite taking place at the Northwest Angle/Islands area in 25 feet of water. Gold or glow-colored jigs have been the ticket on the reefs near Oak Island, Garden Island, and Knight Island. Jumbo perch also are very active here and the bays are producing numbers of northern pike. Along the south shore, many anglers are reporting “the best bite since December” for walleyes. The perch action also has improved in Big Traverse Bay over 33 to 35 feet of water. Midday hours have been best throughout the lake. The Rainy River is open at Mile Marker 165. However, there’s still 100 feet of shore ice and the rest of the river is still covered with as much as two feet of ice.

March finishes with a roar...
Good day sportsfans...

Welcome to another blast on Lake of the Woods, and what a week it has been. Great fishing!

Since the early part of March we've basically made a new home for ourselves on what we consider the western stretches of Big Traverse Bay. And it has been good enough, that this is the area in which we will draw the ice fishing season to a close.

We've got a great bite going in some 30 to 35 foot stretches, and it's just been darn consistent throught the entire month. Most certainly the BEST March fishing that we've experienced in the past five or six years.

Our best shack, a couple days ago, two anglers iced 115 walleyes in ONE day. Of course it's not always this good, but overall some great action and solid numbers... Signs of the "good old days".

With Easter Weekend here... We're not seeing the ice fishing season draw to a close. The shacks must be removed from the lake by April 1st, and that date is closing in quickly.

What remains of our fleet will be pulled from the ice on Monday 03/28. And thus, another wrap is put on a very memorable season.

Currently... Ice conditions remain very good. We've still got a good snow pack base, and three feet of ice to go along with it. So, for those of you that might want to venture on your own, there are still opportunities available.

The official closing date of the walleye fishing season is April 15th. We have accommodations available, and you're more than welcome to come and visit.

Otherwise, the most recent news and anticipation is for the spring river fishing to begin east of Baudette. The talk we're hearing is Birchdale is open (still lots of shoreline ice), and the open flow is making its way toward Fronteer.

Unless you know of someone in the area... Check out the www.clementsonresort.com website, for what is the most accurate on-going river, day to day, river reports. A very informative site for spring river enthusiasts.

There are a couple of weekends to work with in April if you aspire to tackle the Rainy and it's open water offering. Certainly a great opportunity to catch and release the trophy walleye of a lifetime.

Again, we do have accommodations available during this timeframe. I would anticipate, with our current ice conditions (we are still driving on the ice here at the resort) the majority of the river fishing will take place east of Baudette.

So, if you're looking for a cabin, and have the option of trailering a boat, we can set you up. Drop a line and we can get you in with our APRIL lodging specials.

Late March / early April... For some walleye enthusiasts it's the best of both worlds. You can "do-it" on the ice, or venture east and cruise the open water of the Rainy. What great fun!

'Til next time... And a huge THANKS to all that have visited during this winter season!

Set the hook,
GM
