The Rainy River is open, and boats are being put in at the Birchdale access. Early reports indicate consistent walleye action with a jig-and-plastic or minnow combination working best. On the south shore of the main lake, walleyes continue to be caught in 30 to 35 feet of water during the day and in 15 to 20 feet as the sun sets. Walleye action also is strong at the Northwest Angle. Work the reefs near Garden Island with a jigging spoon and you should find active fish. Jumbo perch also are very active at the Angle near Stoney Point. Look to the feeder creeks and inlets of Zippel Bay for northern pike in eight to 12 feet of water.

Ice conditions are deteriorating quickly on the main lake. As of Tuesday morning, ice anglers were limited to walking out at the Graceton Beach access and catching walleyes in 18 feet of water. The Rainy River is now open past Baudette and heading towards Wheeler's Point. Most accesses are now open, but the water started getting muddy on Sunday, which slowed the bite.

The ice fishing season on Lake of the Woods has officially closed. The opening of the feeders streams along the Rainy River has caused some turbidity and water clarity has suffered. The Lake of the Woods Control Board is keeping the Rainy River at normal levels this spring. The Rainy River is open all the way to Wheeler’s Point, and the sturgeon are biting in Four Mile Bay. Fishing along the Rainy River is the best at the mouth of the Rapid River and Silver Creek. Another hot spot is in the Baudette Bay, where clarity is not a problem.

Reminder: Walleye seasons closed on Thursday, April 14th in preparation for the spring spawn. Resorts along the South Shore are gearing up for the summer fishing season. The Northwest Angle and Island Community reported an excellent year for ice fishing, and is looking forward to serving you this summer.

Shorelines throughout the main lake are open and the ice is deteriorating very fast. The opening of feeder creeks along the Rainy River has muddied water conditions during the past week. The river is open all the way to Wheeler's Point and sturgeon action has been very good in Four Mile Bay. The best walleye reports off the Rainy have come from the mouth of the Rapid River and Silver Creek.

Sturgeon fishing is hot right now on Four Mile Bay, and while you’re catching and releasing those big fish, you may be able to watch the MN DNR, Fisheries personnel tag some of the behemoths. The walleye fishing season opens again on Saturday, May 14th. The 9th Annual Ice-Out Trophy Pike Tournament will be hosted by Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods Area Resorts April 23-24th. The tournament runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tournament headquarters is Zippel Bay Resort. For ticket information and more details call 800-222-2537.

There's still ice on the main lake, but many bays are open. The ice that remains is melting rapidly as temperatures reached the 60-degree range again this week. Look for Zippel Bay to provide the first open water northern pike action of the spring.
