Sturgeon fishing has been very good in the Four Mile Bay area with plain hooks and nightcrawlers. Ciscoes, smelt, and large minnows are producing northern pike in the bays. Fish in the 30- to 40-inch class have been caught, with Zippel Bay providing better numbers of big pike.

Nightcrawlers are working well for sturgeon on the Rainy River. Work the reed beds and feeder creek areas of the Rainy for northern pike. Zippel Bay and Baudette Bay also have provided steady northern pike activity.

Sturgeon fishing parties have been forming flotillas on the Rainy River in search of a trophy-sized prize. From all reports the sturgeon fishing has been very hot. Walleye season opens on Saturday, May 14. During the next two weeks the walleye will be spawning in all of the feeder streams to Lake of the Woods. There is a continuous season on northern pike on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River. Northerns are found along all of the reed beds and in the feeder streams to the Rainy River. The Baudette Bay seems to be a favorite spot for northern fishing. Although Lake of the Woods is known world-wide as a premier walleye fishery, more people are beginning to realize that the lake is teaming with jumbo perch. The daily limit for perch is 20, with a total possession limit of 40. We’ve had so many reports of enormous perch being landed on the lake. Come up and see for yourself! These tasty fish seem to be most abundant in the Northwest Angle and Island area of the lake.

Aggregate limit of walleye and sauger is six, with no more than four being walleye. Only one walleye over 28 inches may be kept, and the slot is 19.5-28 inches. No slot limit on sauger. During the next two weeks the walleye will be spawning in all of the feeder streams to Lake of the Woods. There is a continuous season on northern pike on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River. Limit is three northerns with only one over 40 inches; any northern within 30-40 inches must be immediately released. Northerns are found along all of the reed beds and in the feeder streams to the Rainy River. Baudette Bay seems to be a favorite spot for northern fishing. Although Lake of the Woods is known world-wide as a premier walleye fishery, more anglers are catching jumbo perch. Daily limit for perch is 20, with a total possession limit of 40. Many reports of enormous perch being landed on the lake. Seem to be most abundant in the Northwest Angle and Island area.

Minnesota’s walleye fishing opener came in with a bang as anglers hit the waters of Lake of the Woods this past weekend. Water temps and water clarity appear to be normal for this time of year and that means big spring post-spawn walleyes. Anglers were not disappointed as they pulled in limit after limit. The South Shore reported excellent fishing in 11-15 feet of water using a jig and a minnow or leeches. Walleyes in the 15- to 19-inch size range were in abundance and some 21-inch walleyes were released as well. Anglers fished in Four Mile Bay on Saturday and Sunday, many moved into the Morris Point Gap area. The Rainy River area saw many boats in the water and gave reports of good fishing in the airport area near Baudette. The river is at a high level right now as some water has been released from the east and there’s been quite a bit of rain during the last week. The Northwest Angle reported fishermen limiting out in the bays near resorts in 14-18 feet of water. Here they used nightcrawlers and saw walleyes 15-18 inches long coming in. Our first fishing tournament on the lake will be May 20-21 and is headquartered at Wigwam Resort. Call Wigwam at 1-800-448-9260 for all of the details!

The south shore provided limits of walleyes in the 15- to 19-inch class on jigs and minnows in 11 to 15 feet of water. There were also quite a few walleyes over 21 inches released. Four Mile Bay and the Morris Point Gap are providing the best numbers now. The Baudette Airport area of the Rainy River is providing consistent walleye action as well. At the Northwest Angle/Islands area, anglers are catching limits of walleyes in the bays in 14 to 18 feet of water with nightcrawlers.

A possible record-breaking behemoth lake sturgeon was landed by Dave Grashorn and fishing partner Cory Miggins on the Rainy River on May 4. The monster-sized fish measured 71 inches in length, with a 34-inch girth. According to Department of Natural Resources, Division of Fisheries staff the lake sturgeon’s estimated weight was 122 pounds! This is one of several huge sturgeon that have been caught on the river recently. On the South Shore, the 2005 North Star Spring Walleye Classic was a great success, with 41 teams competing over the weekend. The first place team was Todd Prickett and Kurt Kainz, who brought in a total of 12 fish weighing in at 26.16 lbs. Approximately 800 walleyes were weighed in at the end of the event. Overall, the South Shore is experiencing some of the best spring fishing ever. Anglers are having good luck using jigs tipped with minnows, and fishing around Four Mile Bay, the Lighthouse Gap in front of Pine Island, and near the Morris Point Gap. Anglers are already enjoying shore lunches. Some boats are filling out quickly and enjoying some incredibly tasty Lake of the Woods walleye. Some really nice-sized walleyes are being reported around the Northwest Angle and Island Community. The fish are biting in shallow waters from 2-8 feet, and anglers finding crankbaits, such as Shad Raps to be highly effective for their presentation.
