Catching numbers of walleyes along the shore has been relatively easy this week with a jig and minnow combination. Four Mile Bay, the Lighthouse Gap, Pine Island area, and Morris Point Gap have all provided a steady walleye bite. At the Northwest Angle, Shad Raps have turned the majority of fish in two to eight feet of water.

Spring fishing continues to be hot on the South Shore, the Rainy River and around the Northwest Angle and Island Community. Area rains have increased the level of the Rainy River and large debris is moving down the river at this time. Even with the increased flow, Clementson Bay is producing great smallmouth bass, nice-sized northern and redhorse suckers. An excellent bite is being reported along the South Shore of Lake of the Woods. Fish have been hitting hard in Four Mile Bay, Lighthouse Gap, Pine Island and around Zippel Bay. Drifting with a jig and spinner tipped with a live minnow seems to be the preferred presentation. Hammered Gold is the color of choice, especially when water clarity is an issue. The Northwest Angle and Island Community have sent in some really big walleyes for our report this week! Many 24- to 26-inch fish are being released around the islands. Anglers are using several presentations including jigs, bottom bouncers and spinner rigs tipped with either leeches, minnows or crawlers. Drifting or trolling slowly in 18-30 feet of water is producing the best results.

Limits of eating-sized walleyes have been common along the south shore and the bigger fish also have started biting this week. A jig and minnow or spinner/minnow combination is working best in 18 feet of water. The Lighthouse Gap, Four Mile Bay, Pine Island, and Zippel Bay are worth noting. The wind blown points are producing numbers of walleyes at the Northwest Angle. On the Rainy River, anglers are catching smallmouth bass and northern pike in the Clementson Rapids area.

Lots of rain this past week has brought the water levels up on the Rainy River, its tributaries and on the lake. Much of the debris we saw coming down the river from our last rain event has now cleared, making navigation much easier. Even with the cloudy weather and frequent showers the fish are biting! Smallmouth bass and northern pike are biting really well in all feeder streams to the Rainy River. Boats can readily navigate up into many of the feeder streams to the Rainy River right now, making it easy to get to those northerns. Large bobbers, tipped with really big sucker minnows seem to be landing those prized pike. Many locals are using the fishing piers on the Baudette Bay to nab nice sized northerns. #5 Rapalas are being employed for presentation. The sturgeon are really jumping right now on the Rainy River and many people enjoy watching the courtship process which includes breaching the water and rolling like living logs on the river’s surface. The Northwest Angle and Island Community report good fishing on the south side of Oak Island in 20-23 feet of water. Successful anglers are jig fishing with minnows for bait. Areas around Young’s Bay also report lots of good fishing, although the weather has been described as, “less than nice.” Flag Island reports limits of walleyes are abundant and coming in easily in 14-25 feet of water. Smallmouth are also biting in 3-6 feet of water. Many of the big fish for our weekly report are from the Angle this week. Charter Captains along the South Shore of Lake of the Woods are working the waters to produce decent yields of walleyes. Boats are traveling from Pine Island, west to Warroad, to the rocky shoals, then to Little Oak Island, around Big Island and back. The results from this activity are good catches of mighty tasty walleyes! Some spots on the South Shore are so hot that anglers are catching walleyes on nothing more than a bare hook tipped with a minnow; however, the most popular presentation continues to be the hammered gold spinner.

Look for smallmouth bass and northern pike in front of the feeder streams on the Rainy River. Large sucker minnows under floats are working for the pike, while crankbaits remain the ticket for smallmouth. Sturgeon also continue to bite well in the Rainy. Along the south shore of the main lake, hammered gold spinners and minnows are producing limits of walleyes. Better areas this week have been from Pine Island, west to Warroad, and around Little and Big Oak islands. At the Northwest Angle, a jig-and-minnow presentation is producing walleyes in 14 to 25 feet of water near Flag Island and Young's Bay.

The increase in water levels has caused International Falls to release more water in order to bring down Rainy Lake, however; an increased outflow on the north shores of the lake are keeping the water level on Lake of the Woods steady. Fishing has been good along the South Shore of Lake of the Woods. Several hotspots right now include areas around Pine Island, and the Morris Point Gap. While some anglers are using leeches, the hammered gold spinner, tipped with a minnow seems to continue to be the winning combination for presentation. The bite on the Rainy River is picking up and good fishing for northerns and smallmouth bass has been reported on the Baudette Bay near the International Bridge, and in many of the tributaries to the Rainy. Fish at the Northwest Angle and Island Community are coming in from around Brush Island, and east of Garden Island. There has also been some great activity reported around Little Oak Island.

A hammered-gold spinner and minnow is still the best bet for catching a walleye along the south shore of LOW. Leeches are producing a few more fish this week, with the Pine Island and Morris Point Gap areas providing the best bites. Northern pike and smallmouth bass remain active in the Baudette Bay area of the Rainy River. At the Northwest Angle, walleye reports remain consistent from the Brush Island area, Little Oak Island, and east of Garden Island.

Along the south shore, spinner rigs tipped with crawlers or minnows are producing walleyes in 10 to 15 feet of water. The Lighthouse Gap and Pine Island areas have provided the most limits. Work the reed beds in Zippel Bay for bigger walleyes and you can expect to catch northern pike here as well. Water levels on the Rainy River remain high, but it hasn't affected the smallmouth bass and northern pike action. Both species are hitting in the bays and inlets scattered throughout the river. At the Northwest Angle, limits of walleyes continue to be caught in 22 to 26 feet of water around Garden Island on hammered spinners and crawlers.
