Warm summer days have really brought on the walleye action. Fishing has been excellent along the South Shore of Lake of the Woods. Anglers are pulling in some prize-sized walleyes all along the sand points and shorelines where large schools of walleyes are congregating. Best action is being seen in the 24- to 26-foot water depth. Any type of bait - minnows, crawlers or leeches, presented on a hammered gold spinner seems to be working right now. Many anglers are having tons of fun landing northerns around Bostic and Zippel Bay. One party reported catching 40 northerns in one day. Jumbo perch and smallmouth bass are really biting around the Zippel Bay area too. Fishing continues to be phenomenal at the Northwest Angle and Islands. Two good hot spots are off of Bridges and Knight Islands. Several very big walleyes were taken off of Garden Island. Gold spinners with red beads on the harness tipped with a worm has provided the best presentation. The Rainy River is still a great place to try your luck at walleye fishing. The best spots are near the Baudette International Airport, and also one mile east of Baudette. Northerns and smallmouth bass are being landed in the bay at the confluence of the Rapid and Rainy Rivers.

The sand points and and shoreline breaks along the south shore are holding pods of walleyes in 24 to 26 feet of water. A hammered gold spinner tipped with any live bait option is still producing the majority of fish. Sucker minnows or crankbaits have provided steady northern pike action on the weed edges in Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay. At the Northwest Angle, spinners and crawlers have been the ticket for walleyes near Garden Island, Knight Island, and Bridge Island. The Baudette Airport area of the Rainy River is still a safe bet for walleyes, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.

Mixed weather patterns continue to move through the Lake of the Woods area with sunny, warm days punctuated with occasional thunderstorms. The storm fronts often make for fabulous fishing as the walleye action increases before each storm. Fishing has been very good along the South Shore of the lake near rocky reefs in 24-30 feet of water. Here, anglers are jig fishing with leeches and reporting excellent success. The walleyes are also biting right in Zippel Bay. Lots of northerns are taking the bait in the bay as well. Some enormous muskies are being reported around the Northwest Angle and Islands. Anglers casting spinnerbaits on white and yellow tackle presentations brought in the bigger fish. The muskies were all landed in 2-6 feet of water. Lots of nice, eating-sized walleyes are being landed around Oak and Garden Island. Here, anglers are fishing in 8- to 17-foot water depths with great results. Water levels on the Rainy River continue to be high due to recent heavy rains. Water clarity has posed a problem, however, smallmouth bass and northern fishing continues to be good in the inlets and bays of the tributaries to the Rainy River. A Qualifier for the Minnesota Tournament Trail will be held on Lake of the Woods July 9-10 out of Border View Lodge. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. For more info call 320-679-2825. The Championship for the summer-long tournament will be on September 22-23 and will also be headquartered out of Borderview Lodge.

The Northwest Angle and Islands are reporting good fishing in the deep water holes around the Islands. Lots of fish have been coming in on a variety of presentations. It seems like the walleyes are biting on anything - minnows, leeches and crawlers. The best spots seem to be the sand points along the west and east side of Garden Island. Many charter captains are downrigging now in approximately 30 feet of water. This is the week when, traditionally, some of the best fishing is around the Sisters, Knight and Bridges Islands. Fishing is great along the South Shore of Lake of the Woods. Anglers are beginning to pull in trophy-sized walleyes off the rock reefs and rubble piles. Areas just off of Pine Island are continuing to bring in lots of nice, eating-sized walleyes. Jig fishing with worm harnesses and leeches seems to the favored presentation. Smallmouth bass and northern fishing is excellent in all the tributaries to the Rainy River. Water levels are stabilizing on the Rainy River. Bullhead fishing is also an interesting endeavor for those wishing to try it! Bullheads will eat nearly anything they can swallow; however, the preferred bait is worms and nightcrawlers. Crayfish are also prized by bullheads. In July, when the crayfish numbers are at their peak, bullheads will feed heavily on them. Anglers can try tempting the bullheads to bite on small, one-inch whole crayfish that are crushed slightly to produce more scent.
