The hot weather has effectively moved the walleyes into deeper water along the South Shore of the lake. Many of the charters are now downrigging in 30-35 feet of water. For those anglers wishing to jig fish, try any of the rocky reefs and rubble piles. The best presentation for jig fishing are gold spinners tipped with a worm. The Rainy River is seeing some great smallmouth action along the shoreline of the river where the steep drops occur. Use soft-bodied tube baits on Fat Raps for the greatest success. Shorelines are also great spots for pike fishing now that the grass and reeds are high along the water’s edge. We continue to receive reports of gigantic sturgeon rolling and splashing in the waters of the Rainy River. Fishing parties at the Northwest Angle and Islands are having the time of their lives, as we had a report of one party of three gentlemen in two days who not only caught numerous eating-sized walleyes, but also landed two 27-inchers, one 28-1/2-inch, a 31-inch and a 54-inch muskie! Hot pink jigs, tipped with minnows are the ticket for walleye action this week at the Angle. Area Tourism Bureau, Jane, near junction of Hwy 11 and Hwy 172 in Baudette (1-800-382-FISH) |

Fishing parties at the Northwest Angle and Islands are having the time of their lives as they scan the waters for both walleye and muskie. Anglers are fishing in 20-30 feet of water using hammered gold jigs or spinners, or Lindy rigs with minnows, crawlers or leeches. Walleyes in the 2- to 3-pound range are numerous around Little Oak Island, Garden Island and 4 Blocks. Muskies in the 20- to 30-pound range have been caught with a huge 53-inch muskie released. Resorters are reporting that fishing is consistent. The Rainy River is seeing some great smallmouth action along the shoreline of the river where the steep drops occur. Use soft bodied tube baits on Fat Raps. Shorelines are also great spots for pike fishing now that the grass and reeds are high along the water’s edge. We continue to receive reports of gigantic sturgeon rolling and splashing in the waters of the Rainy River. Many people find their antics fascinating, and indeed, those who have had close encounters with these behemoths are awestruck indeed. The hot weather has effectively moved the walleyes into deeper water along the South Shore of the lake. Many of the charters are now downrigging in 30-35 feet of water. Anglers wishing to bait fish will have good success at Graceton Reef, the rock pile by Birch Beach, or near Zippel Bay State Park 10-20 feet out from the swim beach. The best presentation for jig fishing are gold spinners tipped with worms or leeches. Fishermen are finding many nice eaters and are releasing large numbers. Downrigging is producing nice size walleyes 7-10 miles out on the lake with many 20- to 24-inch walleyes caught using shad raps. One fisherman reported hauling in a beautiful 11-pound walleye 5 miles north of the Zippel Bay area. North of Long Point in Big Traverse, walleyes are coming in anywhere from 11-19.5 inches while trolling 4 feet off the bottom of the lake. Many parties are limiting out between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Area Tourism Bureau, Jane, near junction of Hwy 11 and Hwy 172 in Baudette (1-800-382-FISH) |

There are plenty of walleyes and muskies to be had at the Northwest Angle. Jigs or hammered-gold spinner rigs and live bait have produced limits of 2- to 3-pound walleyes in 20 to 30 feet of water. Better areas this week have been Little Oak Island, Garden Island, and Four Blocks. Smallmouth bass are inhaling Fat Raps and tube baits on the sharp, shoreline breaks of the Rainy River. Along the south shore, downrigging is the best option for walleyes in 30 to 35 feet of water. The best reports are coming from seven to 10 miles out with fish hitting Rapalas. There's some action on live bait taking place in 10 to 20 feet of water near Graceton Reef, the rock pile near Birch Beach, and Zippel Bay State Park. The reed-covered shorelines of the Rainy River are holding numbers of good-sized northern pike. You'll find crappies under the docks in the Clementson area, while smallmouth bass continue to bite in the bays and inlets of the river. Along the south shore, down-rigging is producing walleyes on the rocks and reefs between Garden Island and Long Point in 30 to 35 feet of water. Crankbaits, crawlers, or a jig and minnow also have produced fish in 20 feet of water. Shad Raps are turning walleyes near Crow Duck Island at the Northwest Angle. Most of these fish are biting in 12 feet of water. Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau 800) 382-FISH |

There are ample reports of big fish being landed off of the rock rubble piles and throughout the mud flats. Muskie fishing continues to be excellent at the Northwest Angle and Islands. Walleye action has been good with anglers using jigs tipped with minnows and crawlers. The walleyes are on the rock reefs again. Areas around Young’s Bay have been reporting lots of nice eating sized walleyes coming in. The best spots are in 12 feet of water around the weed lines in the bays. The favored bait presentation seems to be minnows. The deep channels on the Rainy River have been releasing some prized sized walleyes. Two hot spots to try are at the mouth of Silver Creek and the confluence of the Rapid and Rainy Rivers. Sturgeon action has been superb, and the northerns are continuing to bite along the reedy edges of the river. One of the river resorts reported a 12-pound walleye caught last week, along with a 20-pound northern and a 62-1/2-inch sturgeon. Great fall jig fishing frenzy will be starting soon. Look for the great river fishing to continue until freeze up. The South Shore has been reporting a great walleye bite in 20-25 feet of water using leeches and spinners. Anglers are also jig fishing around the reefs around Graceton Beach and Long Point. Many presentations are effective, however, crawlers and leeches on live bait harnesses seem to the most successful at this time. The larger, trophy-sized walleyes are now being landed in 34- to 35-foot water depths. Several huge walleyes in the over 28-inch range have been reported this week along the South Shore. The Little Traverse is producing lots of 14-to 17-inch walleyes. Area Tourism Bureau, Jane, near junction of Hwy 11 and Hwy 172 in Baudette (1-800-382-FISH) |

Reports along the south shore indicate a good spinner/leech bite in 20 to 25 feet of water. A jig and minnow combination also is producing walleyes on the reefs near Graceton Beach and Long Point. Muskie activity has really increased at the Northwest Angle, and the Young's Bay area continues to provide limits of walleyes in 12 to 22 feet of water. The Silver Creek area of the Rainy River is a safe bet for walleyes. Northern pike and sturgeon action is going strong in the river as well. Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau (800) 382-FISH |
