Fishing continues to be excellent on Lake of the Woods. Seasonal changes are happening all around, however, the bite is still on. The Islands are reporting walleyes biting in 14-16 feet of water on jigs and minnows with crawlers also doing well. Two big walleyes measuring 30-1/2 and 31 inches were caught and released. Crappies are also starting to bite. Nothing under 12 inches has been caught and one 17-inch crappie was landed by one party. They were actually bringing in stringers of 45. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes are being caught off the points in 14-20 feet of water also on jigs and minnows and small mouth bass are also showing in the same area. Of course, muskies are still the avid fisherman’s delight as they continue provide action in this area of the lake. The Rainy River always holds surprises when fishing its waters. One resort reports that a party caught six walleyes, keeping three, and two sturgeon on frozen shiners. Sturgeon are still jumping in the river which is quite a show. Resorters are seeing signs of the first run of shiners in the river which is a good indicator of the bite that is coming. Smallmouth bass are also being caught in the river. A young 12-year-old landed a beautiful 4 pound smallie in the Clementson area while fishing those waters. Resorts along the South Shore report success while fishing the stretch between Long Point, Garden and Stony. It is as productive for walleyes as it’s been in years. They are fishing in depths of 34-36 feet while downrigging with varied plugs as a presentation. The Zippel Bay area reports big fish caught with bait using crawlers or leeches in the rock areas. Downrigging with crankbaits has provided limits of walleyes in 34 to 36 feet of water on the south shore. Better areas this week have been Long Point, Garden Island, and Stony Point. The rock areas of Zippel Bay reports better numbers of big walleyes being taken this week on crawlers. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes are biting on the points in 14 to 20 feet of water. A jig and minnow started working best in recent days. Don't look past the muskie and smallmouth bass action in this area as well. There's been some big crappies and eating-sized walleyes caught near the Islands in 14 to 16 feet of water. Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau (800) 382-FISH |

South Shore resorts continue downrigging with great success in the waters of Big Traverse. The trolling techniques have outweighed the hook-n-line opportunities thus far. Other anglers have been downrigging off the Graceton Rock Pile and have been getting limits of both walleye and saugers. Fish were in the 16- to 18-inch range plus a few smaller ones. A young 10-year-old caught and released a 24-inch walleye and released a 19.5-incher. Fishermen have been getting their limits by early afternoon. Another report of a walleye caught in 24 feet of water just outside the Gap about 10 miles. That fish weighed in at 10.8 pounds measuring 31.5 inches long. Mr. Steve Hoff is to be congratulated for that catch. The Rainy River is anticipating the fall walleye run. There are signs of the shiners moving up the river, but meanwhile, anglers are experiencing adventure while catching smallmouth bass, walleye, northern and sturgeon. A recent sturgeon fishing championship drew 257 anglers near Birchdale. The champion catch measured 62.5 inches long and had a 27-inch girth before it was released to the waters of the Rainy. Mr. Ray LePage aided by Paul Foyte took home the $1,285 pot. The Northwest Angle and Islands area have had good success in the northern waters. Limits of walleye are being caught while fishing in 21 feet of water using nightcrawlers. The Thull family of Merie Grove caught and released a nice 27-inch walleye besides bringing in their limit. Many other species of fish are also providing action as the smallmouth bass, jumbo perch and muskies are in abundance. Water temps are dropping providing clear waters and good bites. Muskie reports from the Northwest Angle continue to be impressive with topwater baits producing big fish off the rock points. Walleyes and crappies also are biting at the Angle in 14 to 20 feet of water on minnows. At the south shore, live bait is producing walleyes along the shoreline breaks near Pine Island and the Gap. Further out, downriggers with crankbaits or spinners have been turning walleyes in 30 to 35 feet of water. The Bostic Creek area and Zippel Bay are worth noting for northern pike. With the fall season upon us all species of fish are providing the avid sportsman plenty of adventure. The Northwest Angle and Islands area is the place to visit this fall for a variety of experiences. Walleye fishing has been excellent this past week as anglers saw many 20- to 22-inch walleyes caught and released in these waters. They were fishing in 25-30 feet of water using gold jigs and minnows. One 26-inch walleye was reported. Crappies have been starting to bite in the area for even more fishing fun. Other interesting news is that duck hunting has been phenomenal and geese are in great abundance. If variety is the word for the season, fishing the Rainy River will not disappoint. Sturgeon harvest is on until the end of September and anglers have had great success often catching 15 a day. One of the biggest reported this week measured 58 inches. Walleyes, saugers and smallmouth bass are also biting throughout the river. Fishermen visiting the South Shore are still traveling across the Big Traverse and downrigging in 30-35 feet of water finding walleyes in abundance. Many reports of 26-, 29- and 30-inch walleyes are coming in with numbers being released while many eaters have been caught and limits have been filled. Some anglers are bait fishing near Zippel Bay in 20 feet of water using chartreuse spinners tipped with a crawler. That 29-inch walleye gave a great battle before it was landed in the boat. A few large northerns were caught this past week in the 27- to 35-inch range but there were also some caught in the 40-inch range. The best walleye reports from the south shore are from anglers fishing Big Traverse Bay with downriggers in 30 to 35 feet of water. Near Zippel Bay, spinner rigs and crawlers have been working for walleyes in 20 feet of water. The Zippel Bay area also has produced some big pike on minnows. Gold jigs and minnows have been the ticket for walleyes at the Northwest Angle in 25 to 30 feet of water. Sturgeon, walleye, sauger, and smallmouth bass are biting well in the Rainy River. The Northwest Angle and Islands area report walleye fishing to be excellent. Nice eating size fish are in abundance and anglers are bringing in their limits. With cooler temps on the brink, this area will also see a great abundance of crappies to add to the fishing adventure. The walleye bite on the South Shore has remained quite consistent with all parties limiting out. Charters are still venturing across the water to find their walleyes while downrigging in 23-30 feet of water. Some trophy walleyes have been pulled in as well. One group of anglers pulled in 20 keeper walleyes during one day’s trip. A lunker was pulled in this week on the reef off of Bridges. It was caught using a chartreuse walleye diver. Not only is the fishing excellent, but goose hunters in the area are having a great time as geese are in abundance. Bear hunters have reported successful hunts. Water temps in the Rainy River are registering 65.2 degrees with 62.7 degrees in the bay near Clementson. Walleyes caught in that area were measuring in the 13- to 15-inch range and biting on minnows and nightcrawlers on spinners. One group from Alabama caught and released nearly 49 northern pike during one day’s excursion. Sturgeon are also still biting and anglers are anxiously waiting the famous run of shiners for the fall walleye fishing extravaganza to start. Limits of walleyes are being taken with downriggers in 23 to 30 feet of water along the south shore. A jig and minnow combination is producing walleyes at the Northwest Angle in 25 to 30 feet of water. Crappie action also has improved in deep water at the Angle. Numbers of walleyes in the 13- to 15-inch class are being pulled from the Rainy River on spinners and minnows. Northern pike and sturgeon continue to bite on the river as well. The best walleye reports continue to come from anglers downrigging five to 10 miles out from the south shore. Most of these fish are coming from 20 to 30 feet of water, but look for livebait to start turning fish close to shore. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth bass, crappies, and muskies all can be had on the deep and shallow reefs. The shiners haven't started running in the Rainy River, but once they do, look for the walleye bite to improve. Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau (800) 382-FISH |
