The Northwest Angle and Islands reports walleye, northern pike, muskies, smallmouth bass, jumbo perch and crappies all being caught. Resorters are reporting walleyes galore biting on just about any bait. Anglers are limiting out and finding pulling in record lunkers. Anglers fishing on the Rainy River are catching good eating size walleyes. Water temps are still in the 62 degree range. Everyone is waiting with great anticipation for the famous run of emerald shiners upstream. At that point, the walleyes will follow making the fall season some of the most adventuresome in these waters. Lunkers are in abundance. One group of anglers from Missouri caught and released walleyes up to 26.5 inches during the past week. They also caught many sturgeon. South Shore resorts are still downrigging 5-10 miles out into the lake. Parties are going home very happy with their catches. Bait fishing near the shore is expected to start very soon. These folks are also looking forward to the fall walleye run soon to be upon us. Bear season is still in full swing and archers have come into the area for the onset of deer season. The special Canadian goose hunt has been extremely successful with thousands of honkers in the area.

South Shore anglers continue to down rig across the expanse of water near Bridges Island using plugs in deeper waters. Other anglers are moving in to more shallow water of 15-18 feet for bait fishing and finding the bite to be consistent. They are using jigs and shiners. Four Mile Bay has also been a popular spot for fishermen going as deep as 18 feet and jigging using shiners and minnows. Walleyes over 9.5 pounds have been pulled in as well as northerns catching the hook. The Northwest Angle and Islands are fishing in 14-20 feet of water. The average walleye pulled in is measuring 18 inches and fishermen are limiting out. Their presentation is a jig with a minnow or shiner. Crappies are starting to hit now as water temps are declining. The first arrival of ringbills and northern ducks has been sited in the area also. Soon there may be sitings of 500 or more in bays which hunters can feast their eyes on. Fishermen are avidly awaiting the fall run on walleyes up the Rainy River. Atmospheric temps have been high, but water temp has dropped to the mid 50’s. This is what the emerald shiners are looking for to start their run. Meanwhile, small walleyes are in abundance and one angler was able to pull in a 22- and 24-inch walleye. Sturgeon are also biting. Resorts near Clementson are checking water temps and watching for the evidence of shiners in the river nightly. Lake of the Woods hosted the MTT fishing tournament this past weekend with 32 teams catching 437.58 pounds of walleye and the big fish prize came in for a 9.2-pound walleye. The 7th Annual North Star Fall Walleye Classic will be held this weekend (October 7-8) on Lake of the Woods.

Many anglers continue to implement downriggers with plugs in the deep water near Bridges Island. Other anglers have moved shallow and begun live-bait fishing in 15 to 18 feet of water. A jig and shiner minnow has worked best in 18 feet of water throughout Four Mile Bay. Shiner minnows also are providing steady walleye action in 14 to 20 feet of water at the Northwest Angle. Crappie action is improving on a daily basis as well. Although the major run of shiner minnows hasn’t started in the Rainy River, walleyes are being taken in 15 feet of water.

Fishing at the Northwest Angle and Islands remains consistent. Anglers are fishing in 23-24 feet of water using 3/8-ounce jigs with minnows. Thirty-inch walleyes are roaming the waters, ready for the catch. Since water temps have dropped, crappies have settled into the waters and are providing great fishing. South Shore resorts are reporting the walleyes are moving in closer to the shoreline. Fishermen are bait jigging with shiner minnows to chase the walleyes in depths of 15-20 feet of water. Morris Point Gap and Four Mile Bay are great locations for eating size fish. There has been a tremendous amount of catch and release being done with 27-inch fish being landed. This past weekend saw the 2005 North Star Fall Walleye Classic. There were 68 teams and many pounds of walleye caught. First place winners were Todd Weinkauf and Dennis Johnson catching a total of 25.2 pounds. Second place winners were Steve Alverson and Nate Limoges catching 24.42 pounds of walleye and third place winners were Mark Chapman and Terry Wizcek catching 22.86 pounds. Everyone is waiting to hear the news from the Rainy River. It has been reported that anglers are catching trophy sized fish from Wheelers Point to the city of Baudette. Depths of 25-26 feet of water are being targeted. Thus far, the shiners are not yet running, but guides are expecting them to start at any time. Further up the river near Clementson, water temp is 50.3 degrees with 45.4 degrees in the bay. Reports of 27+inch walleyes caught in 17 feet of water. Temps are dropping drastically at night with frost found on surfaces. Keep checking in with Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau and area resorts for updated reports.

Walleyes and slab crappies are active in 24 feet of water at the Northwest Angle. Jig fishing is most productive for walleyes along the south shore in 15 to 20 feet of water. Morris Point Gap and Four Mile Bay have produced limits of fish and numbers of walleyes over 27 inches. The best reports for walleyes on the Rainy River have come from Wheeler’s Point to Baudette in 26 feet of water.

Mother Nature has blessed the us with warmer temps. October means great fishing on the Rainy River.Water temps are in the 50’s and walleyes are biting. The emerald shiners are there, but are yet to be running strong due to the warm atmospheric temps. Walleyes are in 20 feet of water using jigs and minnows. Fishermen are finding their size range to be 17-19 inches. Many parties are practicing catch and release and pulling up 24- to 28-inch walleyes. Rumor has it there’s a northwestern front moving in, and the colder weather should push the shiners farther up the river. When the shiners are truly running, it’s common to catch beautiful 10- to 12-pound walleyes. Sturgeon from 4-5 feet long are still biting in the river. South Shore resorts are bait fishing along the South Shore from Morris Point Gap to Four Mile Bay. They are finding walleyes in 20-24 feet of water using jigs and shiners. Here the shiners are running in abundance. Perfect eating size fish are being pulled up regularly and anglers are limiting out. The Northwest Angle and Islands are reporting a plenitude of walleyes and crappies in abundance. Anglers are limiting out in the deep points. They are using jigs and minnows for bait.

The Rainy River is a safe bet for limits of walleyes and some legitimate trophy-caliber fish in 18 to 24 feet of water near Birchdale and Clementson. The shiner run is on, which means a jig and minnow or crankbait will provide the most action. Anglers along the south shore are catching a lot of eating-sized walleyes at the Morris Point Gap in 14 to 17 feet of water. Muskie action at the Northwest Angle has been "exceptional" along the islands and reefs for anglers trolling crankbaits. Duck hunters have noticed better numbers of ringbills and buffleheads in the area this week.
