Is there ice? When will the ice be on? Are they ice fishing yet? The ice condition changes daily. Cold days bring more ice, while mild days impede the process. However, Four Mile Bay has been reported as completely frozen over with 3 inches of ice. The river is freezing, with 1 to 2 inches being reported in most places. A few exceptionally hasty anglers have been spotted out on the ice, but most are waiting patiently for the four inches of clear new ice that is recommended by the DNR as the absolute minimum for an individual walking on the ice. Many resorts have reported that they are certain to be set up and ready to fish by the second weekend of December. With the ice comes a change in fishing regulations. Beginning December 1st, 2005 and continuing through to April 14th, 2006 the possession limit for walleye and sauger combined is eight fish, where not more than four can be walleye. The slot limit continues with anglers allowed to keep one walleye over 28 inches, while all walleye from 19.5 inches through 28 inches must be immediately released. It’s not too late to make ice fishing reservations with your favorite resort or sleeper division. Give them a call and check for availability so you can take part in this grand tradition. The lake will be ready soon! Keep checking our website for updates, and we’ll see you on the ice! Area Tourism Bureau, Jane, near junction of Hwy 11 and Hwy 172 in Baudette (1-800-382-FISH) |

It’s only been a few weeks since open water fishing ended, but they have been long weeks for restless anglers. They are an inquisitive lot, wanting to know when, where, and how long. Weeks of anticipation have led us to the point we’re at today. This is it. Hard water season is here. While the more southern portion of Rainy River is not yet completely frozen over, it is mostly frozen with 2-3 inches. Move up towards the lake, and you’ll find up to 7 inches in spots closer to Wheeler’s Point. Along the South Shore, 8-10 inches have been reported at Four Mile Bay, and many resorts are starting to put out their houses. The focus at the present time points towards Pine Island and other traditional “first ice” locations to get things started. Further along the shore, Zippel Bay is reporting 12-13 inches with anglers fishing out to 23 feet. Across Big Traverse Bay (more commonly known as “the lake”) reports range from 9-12 inches, with the ice thinning the further out you go. Snowmobile trails crossing the lake have not yet been reported as open, and as always, extreme care should be used when traveling on the ice. Up at the Northwest Angle and Islands, 5-7 inches has been reported, with a dusting of snow. The weather is predicted to remain frigid, and resorts optimistically plan on getting set up to fish within the week. The ice will continue to build with the cold temperatures, but is always volatile. Changing currents and unpredictable weather patterns can change the ice in a matter of days. Follow the DNR recommendations for minimum ice thickness, and always check for local conditions before venturing out.

Four Mile Bay has at least 10 inches of ice and a consistent evening walleye bite in six to nine feet of water. Many resorts started pulling permanent houses past Pine Island on Monday where 10 inches of ice had formed. The best reports on the lake side of the island are coming from 16 to 19 feet of water.

The water is clearing and the fishing is getting up to par with what many have come to expect from first ice on Lake of the Woods. In spite of a stronger current coming from Rainy Lake and heavy snowfalls recently insulating the ice, 9 inches have formed on Rainy River. Reports are that fish are following the currents, and biting from Clementson all the way up to the lake. Follow the river up to 4-Mile Bay, and you’ll find that the resorts are fishing on the 14-16 inches of ice north of Pine Island in 18-24 feet of water. The sauger bite is picking up, and along with their famous walleye cousins, are biting on gold jigs. Further up the shore along Morris Point anglers are also finding up to 16 inches of ice, and are dropping lines in 19-23 feet with gold, chartreuse, and other bright jigs being the most predominately effective. A few catch and release sized fish are being pulled up, but the majority fit perfectly in the supper pan. Resorts at the Northwest Angle have just recently started their hard water season. Fourteen to 15 inches of ice have developed in most places, and many resorts have set up their houses along the south side of Oak Island. Preliminary reports are that walleyes are being brought in on bright jigs here as well, with glow lures being ideal for some fortunate anglers. While the ice depths are impressive for this time of year, water currents under the water and insulation of snow from above have left some thin spots. Travelers are advised to continue using caution while on the ice, and always check with a local bait shop or resort before venturing out.

Fishing is getting a little better everyday. The lake froze over after a violent wind that made the water murky. With a layer of ice as a cap the water takes 10+ times as long to clarify and this really gave our early ice "bite" lockjaw. Now for some good news; since we are off of Pine Island between Rainy River and Bostic Creek we are clearing up faster than anywhere else on the lake. Fish numbers have tripled since first ice and continuing to improve, we now have houses keeping 12 - 18 fish per day and we mounted a 9 pounder this week. We believe this slow December may produce outstanding fishing for January and February. Call your crew, let's go fishing!
