Some of the Pro staff got together on Lake of the Woods to celebrate New Year's! Myself and Liz went up early to scout out some good water -- after spending some time checking deeper water -27 foot so, we worked our way back in the more shallow water. The hotspot seem to be around the 21 foot level. We landed in a total of 18 walleye with an additional two that needed to be released because they were too big. The key on this big Lake seem to be finding any type of structure. We happen to find a very small hole of 21 foot of water that was surrounded by 20 of water.

The main bait that caught walleyes was shiners, a fathead also worked. Jigging was a must, and it seemed that spoon baits with a fathead minnow head seem to bring them in.

We did also catch a couple walleyes in the overnight hours. I've been told a number of times that Lake of the Woods does not produce walleyes throughout the evening. We found this not to be true. Although the action was not hot and heavy. We did actually pick up a couple.

Happy new year to all in May 2006 be more enjoyable than 2005 - make every day better!

Many resorts are saying that cloudy water conditions are limiting the walleye action. A few fish are coming from the Pine Island area in 14 to 24 feet on red glow jigs and minnow heads. Better numbers of sauger were caught this week in deeper water. There's still some fish coming from Four Mile Bay during the early morning and evening hours. At the Northwest Angle, gold jigs have produced walleyes in 20 to 25 feet of water on the south side of Oak Island.

While first ice traditionally provides some of the best fishing of the year, the early ice on Lake of the Woods delivered not limits, but disappointment. High winds stirred up the lake, only to be followed by the early ice cap, restricting the waters ability to clear. Time is the only cure, and the patience of dedicated anglers is starting to pay off. Although the lake has yet to completely clear, it has cleared significantly, especially along the South Shore, and continues to clear faster than anywhere else on the lake. Walleye action has been located in 15-18 feet of water during the morning and evening hours, with the bite traveling to the 22- to 28-foot range during the day. Walleyes are being pulled in on ½-ounce golden and glow red jigs accompanied by shiner heads. The ice is a solid 16-18 inches, and resorts are driving out on plowed roads. The ice on the Rainy River varies greatly from one location to the next. Anywhere from 7-18 inches has been reported from Baudette to Birchdale, so anglers are advised to use caution when going out on the ice. Fish are biting lightly on the river as well, in 15-19 feet of water. Glow jigs are the choice here as well, and pink, green and orange glow with shiner heads have been pulling in the choice walleyes. Ice fishing may have started later at the Northwest Angle and Islands than on the rest of the lake, but the fish are determined to make up the difference. Resorts are set up south of Oak Island, and are fishing 6 inches off the bottom on rock structure. The majority of the catch is 17- to 19-inch walleye and sauger, with a few burbot in the mix. Reports of 20- to 24-inch walleyes being caught and released are coming in from multiple houses.

Walleye and sauger reports have improved as the water clears, but the bite is still expected to get much better. The best reports this week are coming from the Pine Island area, about 2.5 miles out in 23 to 25 feet of water. Reports from the Northwest Angle have been much better with limits of walleyes and saugers being pulled with consistency from 25 feet of water.

The Northwest Angle and Islands continue to experience some of the best walleye ice fishing they’ve seen in years. When the sun is shining, limits are being filled with 14- to 18-inch fish, perfect for eating! Resorts are set up on the 24 inches of ice south of Oak Island, in 26 feet of water. Glow jigs with florescent colors seem to be pulling in the most fish, and both a jigging and a bobber presentation are working well. A perch run has begun, in addition to the large burbot that have been pulled up recently. The water is clearing and the fish are hungry on the south side of Lake of the Woods. With 18-20 inches of solid, quality ice and water clarity to 10½ feet on the South Shore, the conditions are setting up for a spectacular run on walleye. Anglers are finding success in 22-24 feet of water, with some going as deep as 30 feet, and others as shallow as 10. The preferred presentation is chubs, with gold and chartreuse to the east, and blue and orange to the west. While much of the attention is focused on the ice between Pine Island and Morris Point Gap, the Zippel Bay, Long Point, and Rocky Point areas are all finding improved catching with better water clarity. Resorts are noticing a half and half walleye/sauger mix brought in by their fishermen. The bite remains light, except for the big fish, which are hitting the bait aggressively. Ice conditions continue to be unstable on the Rainy River east of Baudette, and travel restrictions remain in effect.

Steady Eddie and I have just come off the LOW after a few days of fishing out of Morris Point!

The folks from Morris Point are wonderful! They gave us a few pointers and even helped out when I bent the axle on the fish house ! Oh well - had to leave it so -- back up next weekend to pick it up! Just might have to fish the LOW again.

We attempted a number of things to catch walleye and found the best depth to be 21 to 26 with 25 being the best for us.  Fathead on a red hook with a yellow bead above the hook worked best. However, with out jigging they would not come in. Every fish we got came in and looked at the jig line - then took the set line! Overall - we ate well and came home with limits --- who could ask for better than that!!

Again - I would like to say thank you to the folks at Morris Point for taking care of us so well. Good food, Beautiful view of the lake from the bar, everything you need for your fishing outing and just dang nice folks running the place!

Near the Rocky Point area, walleyes are hitting glow jigs in 17 to 20 feet of water. While the walleye bite has improved, sauger action remains slow. A few decent walleye reports also have come from the Big Traverse area in 33 feet of water. The Oak Island area at the Northwest Angle is producing limits of walleyes, sauger, and jumbo perch in 26 feet of water. On the Rainy River, authorities still are recommending no travel east of Baudette.
